Alice A. Heslop, 88 Loving Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma and Great-great-grandma ROCKFORD - Alice A. Heslop, 88, of the rural Rockford-Winnebago area died Friday night, May 6, 2011, in her home, surrounded by her loving family after a short illness. Born March 1, 1923, in Platte, S.D., the daughter of Nicholas and Sophia (Jansen) DeWall. Graduated from Leeds (Iowa) High School in 1941. Alice was married to her high school sweetheart, Merlin W. Heslop, for 68 years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Alice worked for J.C. Penney for more than 20 years and was an active member of Evergreen Covenant Church. She loved crocheting and gardening and truly enjoyed all the family gatherings. Alice is lovingly survived by sons, Dewey (Lois) Heslop of Pecatonica, Don Heslop of Lake Summerset, David (Shirley) Heslop of Winnebago and Gary (Diane) Heslop of Rockford; daughters, Cindy (Bob) Hunter of Pecatonica and Karen (Larry) Anderson of Rockford; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson; sister, Mae (Kenneth) Freitag; sister-in-law, Alice Uphouse; and several nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; husband on Dec. 21, 2007; grandson, Douglas Heslop; guardian great-grandson, David Riffe Jr.; daughter-in-law, Pat Peterson; brothers, Duane, Milton and Vernon DeWall; sisters, Leona and Beatrice DeWall; and nephews, Michael and William Freitag. Alice's family wishes to thank Dr. Susan DeGuide; nurse, Julie; and the staff of VNA for their care and support. A very special thank-you is given to Alice's granddaughters for the gentle and affectionate care provided by them during her final days; Grandma would have been proud. She was born on March 7, 1941, in the town of Bacoor, Cavite, in the Philippines. She was born to Carlos Espiritu and Narcisa Maggay Espiritu. She was one of six children., As a young woman, Angie was a nanny and lived in Hong Kong and London as well as traveling to various parts of the world. Angie made Macomb her home in 1978 and was married to David Haulk. Later they were divorced. Angie was an employee of McDonough District Hospital for more than 24 years., One brother, Augusto Espiritu, and one sister, Stella Espiritu, of the Philippines survive. She is also survived by a very special niece, with whom she was very close, Raquel Madrelejo, and her family of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and many nieces and nephews in various parts of the world., She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister., SERVICES: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home, Macomb, with Monsignor Richard Pricco conducting. Anne C. Fairchild, 90 ROCKFORD - Anne C. Fairchild, 90, of Rockford died at 2:29 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, in Provena St. Anne Center. Born June 12, 1920, in Chicago, the daughter of Michael Charles and Anna Voss Zimmer. Graduated sixth in her class in 1942 from, , where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Omega sorority. Married James Fairchild on Feb. 13, 1943, in Chicago; he predeceased her. She married Lt. Col. Edwin A. Lutz on May 18, 1996, in Rockford. She was a member of Cathedral of St. Peter and had served as the vice president of Catholic Women's League. She began her career in research and development for AB Dick Co. She spent time raising her children and then returned to her profession as the personnel manager of Clifford Berg and Associates. She retired in 1976 after devoting 12 years as the executive director of the Rock River Valley Council of Girl Scouts. Anne was a Brownie and Cadet Scout leader, member of the Winnebago County Garden Club and was on the board of directors of OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center's Auxiliary. She was a member of the Pink Ball committee and served as its treasurer. She was also a member of the Newcomers Club and was president of the Jessie I. Spafford department of the Rockford Woman's Club. She served as president of St. Bridget Church Mother's Club and was on the board of Cathedral of St. Peter Home and School Association. She was also a member of the Personnel Club of Rockford and was president for several terms of Quota International Club of Rockford as well as being treasurer of the board of directors of NIAAA. Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col. Edwin Lutz; children, Patricia Anne Evan, Michael James (Joan) Fairchild, Steven William (Sally) Fairchild and Mark Joseph (Margaret) Fairchild; grandchildren, Mary Anne Evan, Joan Marie Evan, Kelly Fairchild and Caroline Fairchild; and her sister, Eleanor "Kay" Kate. Predeceased by her parents; infant daughter, Veronica Martha; brothers, Charles and Edward Zimmer; and son-in-law, John M. Evan. Barbara Jean (Mitchell) Hutchins, 89 of Sycamore died Friday, May 6, 2011 at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center., She was born Jan. 18, 1922 in Sycamore, the daughter of Rueben and Clara (Hawkinson) Nelson. She married Harry "Hap" Mitchell on March 5, 1943 in Kingsville, Texas, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. He died on March 4, 1995 after a wonderful 52 years together. She later married Earl Hutchins on Nov. 29, 1997, who preceded her in death on April 24, 2002., Barbara was a graduate of the Sycamore High School, Class of 1940. CLARA RUTH BRILES

Clara Ruth Briles, 91, of DeKalb, passed away Saturday, May 7, under the tender care of the DeKalb County Hospice at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, DeKalb., Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Riverside, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, Ruth was the daughter of Robert Pierce and Ida (Hightower) Wilson. She married Worthie Elwood Briles on June 6, 1941, in Austin, Texas, while the two of them were attending the, . Later that summer, Ruth and Elwood received their Bachelors of Arts degrees in zoology from UT. They then went to the, at Madison to begin work on their advanced degrees. However, those efforts were set aside so that Elwood could serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II., Following World War II and the births of their first two children (Susan and David), Ruth and Elwood returned to Madison where they received their advanced degrees in immunogenetics in 1948 (Ruth: M.S., Elwood: Ph.D.). The family then moved to College Station, Texas, where Elwood was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M and where their younger daughter Sara was born. After the family moved to DeKalb in 1957, Ruth worked with Elwood at the DeKalb Agricultural Association as a research associate in immunogenetics research from 1958-1968. From 1968-1970, Ruth was an Instructor in biological sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb., From 1970-2000, Ruth again worked with Elwood, this time as a research associate for immunogenetics research in the Biology Department at NIU. On October 9, 2004, Elwood and Ruth were recognized for their contributions to avian genetics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture., Ruth was active in the American Association of University Women, volunteered at the Ellwood House and served for several years as the superintendent of the Sunday school at First Congregational Church in DeKalb., She is survived by her husband, Elwood; children, Susan Marie (Duane) Kniebes of Boulder, Colo., David Elwood (Marilyn Crain) Briles of Birmingham, Ala. and Sara (Richard Briles Moriarty) Briles of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Dustin Lincoln (Dana Churness) Briles Moriarty of Herbster, Wis., Rachel Florence (fiancé Duy Hoang) Briles of Austin, Texas and Travis Crain Briles of Boulder, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Linda (Kniebes) Kozak and Carrie (Steve) Swift (Kniebes) of Lisle, Ill. and Van Kniebes of Boulder; great-grandchildren, Wylder Lee and Olin Elwood Moriarty of Herbster; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews, including especially nephews, Jesse Rodman Wilson Jr. (Cathy) of Cold Springs, Nev., Hal (Claudia) Cochran of West Covina, Calif., Dale (Jacqueline) Cochran of San Clemente, Calif. and Roy (Thérèse) Krebs of Alexandria, Va., She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Robert Pierce Wilson II, Travis Hudson Wilson I, Ida Gertrude Krebs, Charlotte Josephine Cochran, Sarah Elizabeth Quinlan and Jesse Rodman Wilson Sr.; and her brothers-in-law, Connally Oran Briles, Van Gordon Briles and Jack David Briles., A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 5, in the Hearthside Room in the Visitors' Center of the Ellwood House, 509 W. CHARLES 'BUD' ROBERT RANDLES, 76 DAVIS - Charles "Bud" Robert Randles, 76, of Davis died at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at home after a short illness. Born Oct. 13, 1934, in Brodhead, Wis., the son of Helen (Drevdahl) Randles. Lived for the past 20 years in Lake Summerset, moving there from Rockford. Bud attended high school in Beloit, Wis., and received his GED in Rockford. He married the former Leona Kincannon on April 17, 1954, in Cherry Valley. She was the love of his life, and throughout their 57 years of marriage they grew in their love for each other and for the Lord. He was employed as a technical auditor by National Lock, Sterling Cutter Tools, Rockwell and Textron for a combined 50 years. Bud was a member of Elim Baptist Church in Rockford for 30 years and a member of Faith Community Church for the past 20 years. Bud's life was centered around his love of his heavenly Father, his family and friends. He enjoyed being with youth and for many years was an AWANA leader in church and coached fast-pitch softball for youth. Friends of his children were treated as part of his family, sometimes even living with them. He often was sought out for fatherly advice. Survivors include wife, Leona Randles; daughter, Gwendolyn Watkins of Oak Park; sons, Gary (Kim) Randles of Rockford and Greg (Donna) Randles of Riverview, Fla.; daughter, Glenda Millington of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Christine, Patrick (Meredith) and Kathryn Watkins, Charles, Stephanie and Lindsay Randles, Melissa Middleton, Shawn Maldonado, Kelly (Matt) Grisham, Ashley Grayless, Cortney Grayless and Melissa Millington; great-grandchildren, Reaghan and William Watkins, Aniston Middleton, Dominic Maldonado, Ashlyn and Kennedy Grisham; sister, Lillian Luchsinger of Janesville, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. She was also beloved by her extended family, which included many devoted nieces and nephews. Dora lived many years in Springfield, IL, where she and Ray raised their family. She was employed by the Secretary of State's office. Those who knew Dora found her to be a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs. She always believed that "this will be the season." She is still waiting (but she loved them anyway). She was born in Chatham, on August 20, 1923 to James Joseph and Velma Marie Otti Shields who preceded her in death as did her sisters Alberta Baumhardt and Roberta Workman. Eileen married Junior LaVern Workman on July 2, 1962 in Clinton. She worked for the FBI as an executive secretary and retired from the State of Illinois Local Governmental Police Officers' Training Board. Mrs. Workman was very involved with Chatham United Methodist Church and the Auburn Christian Church as a choir director, soloist, and Sunday School teacher. Eileen was a very accomplished musician and studied music in her youth. She was a faith filled woman, leading her nieces and nephews to the Lord and stepped up to fill in as Mother, when her nieces' and nephews' mother died. As part of her faith ministry, she was an Auxiliary Member of the Gideon's Bible Association and involved with many charitable associations such as the American Center for Law and Justice, Billy Graham Organization, 700 Club and others. Born June 2, 1922, in Homer, Ill., the daughter of Clell and Zoe Clutter, Helen was married to the late Gilbert J. "Dick" Goff on Aug. 2, 1942, in DeKalb. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1970., For many years, Helen managed at the DeKalb Montgomery Ward store in the catalog department. She lived most of her life in the DeKalb community, moving here from Homer. Helen was a 57-year member of, , reaching the level of Senior Regent, etc. Helen was also very active in DeKalb American Legion Auxiliary 66 for 36 years. She loved to garden and her beautiful plants and flowers spoke for themselves. Helen loved watching the New York Mets, playing cards and reading. Goodsell, Jr., 25, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Roodhouse, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at his residence., He was born Sept. 18, 1985, in Jacksonville, the son of John Allen and Brenda Burger Goodsell, Sr., He is survived by his mother, Brenda Young of Virden; his father, John Allen Goodsell, Sr. of Jacksonville; his grandfather, Westley Goodsell of Yuma, Ariz.; and six brothers, Chris Goodsell of Jacksonville, Dan Hughes of Virden, David Hughes of White Hall, Dustin Shaw, Joey Shaw, and Bryan Woods, all of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Eloise Goodsell; and maternal grandparents, Gerald and Esther Burger., J.J. attended North Greene Schools and had worked at Applebee's in Jacksonville. He enjoyed playing video games and loved being with his family and friends., Funeral services will be held noon Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse. John Booth Bean

He was born April 5, 1914, in Decatur, a son of Thomas Hammond and Ethel Corrinne Booth Bean. On June 19, 1937, he married Ruth Elizabeth King in Decatur. She died Nov. 2, 1986., He was a 1932 graduate of Decatur High School. In 1936 he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Millikin University in Decatur. In 1973, he received his master's degree from Southern Illinois University., John worked for Moorman's, Monroe Chemical Co. and the Illinois State Division of Rehabilitation. He was the owner of Bean Hobby and Toy Shop., John was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church since 1937. He was a member of the Beta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He belonged to the Quinssippi Stamp Club and numerous philatelic organizations. John was the first president of the Quincy Jaycees. As such, he was also a member of the Exhausted Roosters. He was president of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce when it received its first All-American City title. He was a member of the Quincy Elks and a member of the Quincy German Club. In addition to stamp collecting, he enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and fishing for salmon in Alaska., Survivors include two children, Jackie Bean Oberg and her husband, Don, of Kenai, Alaska, and Tom Bean and his wife, Lia, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jonathan Oberg and his wife, Gina, of Ottawa, Kan., and David Oberg and his wife, DJ Stoeberl, of Crozet, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Kendra Veronica Oberg of Crozet, Va., and Kayleigh Elizabeth Oberg of Ottawa, Kan.; a sister, Mary Mills of Baton Rogue, La.; four nieces; two nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; a very special friend of many years, Marion Grimmer and her daughter, Barb Rowell; also a very large extended family from the entire Bickford Cottage, staff, residents and their families, including Connie Fielding, Sue Ostermiller, Lisa O'Brien, Steve Scott, Roxie Bunk and Kim Lenz., In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Bean Jr.; and a sister, Sarah Black., SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Vermont Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Scott Grulke and the Rev.George Youtzy conducting. Whittle, John C. Passed away within the Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, April 14, 2011 surrounded by his children. Born June 11, 1938. He is survived by children Joleen (Dan) Farnesi of Homer Glen, Julie Dougherty of Lansing, John Whittle Jr. of Lansing and Jennifer Whittle of Florida. He is also survived by his partner of Phoenix, AZ Alice Forrester and mother of his children, Eileen (Quinlan) Whittle; brothers Bobby Dale Strauch of Phoenix, AZ and Gerald Strauch of Hebron, IN.; wonderful nephew Ron (Veronica) Whittle Jr., Connie Embry, Donna (Danny) Brozowski, Michael (Jodi) Whittle, Kathy Gibbons, Selly Strauch, Katie Strauch, grandfather to 12 and great uncle to many. John served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He also made many friends in Phoenix and was always there to lend a helping hand, advice, a shoulder to cry on and anything else that someone asked or needed from him. He had a wonderful support group in Phoenix were he made many friends over the years. He loved to pan for gold out west and travel to Laughlin to gamble a little bit. He also loved his "roundup" trips. He will be greatly missed by the Phoenix group of friends, as well as family here back home in the Chicago area. He was nicknamed "Chicago John". Everyone knew him by that name. Memorial service to be held at a later date at his daughter's home in Homer Glen.

Born June 9, 1932, in Sycamore, the daughter of John and Frances (Erickson) Lahti, she married James Clayton McCue Nov. 9, 1949, in Sycamore., Mary was employed by Automatic Electric, W.T. Grant Department Store and as a nurse at Pine Acres Retirement Center. Mary was an active member of Sycamore United Methodist Church where she was involved in the choir, United Methodist Women, the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Sycamore Food Pantry. He married Evelyn Ard in December of 1950 in Granite City and she preceded him in death Dec. 2, 2000. He then married Florence McDowell and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Brenda (husband, Larry) Conner of Fordland, Mo., Deborah Moore of Pittsfield, Rick (wife, Elana) Ashburn of Jacksonville, Fla. and Sheila (fiancé, Buddy Summers) Marable of Winchester; eleven grandchildren, Scott (Rachel) Conner, Brady Conner, Rodney (Deana) Ashburn, Courtney (Robert) Nelson, Richard K. Moore, Mindy Moore, Shane Ashburn, Kenneth L. Marable, Kylar Marable, Clayton Summers and Austin Summers; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Lester, and Roy Ashburn; two sisters, Hilda Madden and Ada May Ashburn, in infancy; and a son-in-law, Billy Moore. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He then worked for Illinois B & O Railroad, before becoming a cutter in the steel industry. He was employed several years by American Steel in Madison County as well as other area steel mills. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the NRA. Married his loving wife, Jeanine Youngberg, on Nov. 28, 1952, in Rockford and enjoyed 58 years of many wonderful adventures with each other, their children and grandchildren. He took great pride in his life's work as the past president of Youngberg Industries in Belvidere, semi-retiring in the '90s. Bob loved to return to the shop to visit his many cherished and longtime friends that he had built relationships with over the years. His love for his family and friends gave him great joy throughout his life. He never had an idle moment as he enjoyed spending time fishing, going "up north," planting flowers, woodworking, shopping at home centers, lending a hand and talking to just about anyone that crossed his path. He was a Mason, Shriner and an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a great man who will be missed by all who loved and knew him. Ruth (Cook) Snygg, 83 ROCKFORD - Ruth (Cook) Snygg, 83, of Rockford passed away Friday, May 6, 2011, while holding hands with her husband of 53 years. Born June 17, 1927, in Janesville, Wis. Ruth met Richard E. Snygg while working at National Lock Co.; they married June 23, 1958. Over the years, she worked at Parker Pen, National Lock, Rock River Towers and as a self-employed cleaning lady. Ruth went back to school and earned her GED from Rock Valley College at the age of 63. Though born of German and French descent, she took classes at Rock Valley College to learn to read and speak in Swedish upon graduation. Ruth translated numerous documents for families of Swedish decent. She is the beloved mother of Darrell (Debi) Snygg and Diana (Jeff) Williams; and grandmother to Brian, Scott, Seth and Hannah. She took great pride in her four grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them and sharing stories as they grew into young adults. For more than 50 years, she was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she was married and baptized. Ruth was extremely involved in a variety of activities and organizations. She was an active member of John Erickson/Corona Lodge 23 for more than 50 years. She was a charter member of the Swedish Culture Society and long-time member of the Swedish Historical Society. Ruth served as the public relations officer for the Kishwaukee Genealogy Society and was a board member for the Winnebago Sight and Hearing Organization. Also a member of the Rockford Historical Society and Midway Village, an active supporter of Right to Life participating in several marches. As a cancer survivor, Ruth was active in the Saint Anthony Cancer Survivors Society. Although Ruth lacked cooking skills, she loved to feast on Swedish food, enjoying good food with family and friends. Ruth desired to be outdoors and loved flowers, birds and fishing. She spent many years enjoying time with family and friends at her cottage on Clear Lake, Milton, Wis. During Ruth's life, she was blessed with endless experiences but never learned to drive. Although her husband and brothers made several unsuccessful attempts, giving up after she drove on the wrong side of the road, hit a tree and drove off a bridge. These adventures made her destined to be a passenger. Ruth's childhood was difficult as she grew up and lived in numerous foster homes and foster farms. She moved from Janesville, Wis., to Rockford in 1954, living at the Girls Residence until marrying in 1958. Ruth and Richard were foster parents for an infant girl before having their own children. She greatly loved her children and was very involved in their actives. She was a den mother for Pack 387 and served as a room mother. She always looked forward to attending her children's activities. Ruth loved everyone she met and was always cheerful with a kind word. She spent her final year at St. Anne Provena Nursing Home and had many special relationships with the staff and residences. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Darrell (Debi) Snygg and Diana (Jeff) Williams; brother, Howard; sister, Dorothy (Ray) Erb; grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Seth and Hannah; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cook; numerous nieces and nephews, including several originally from Rockford, Debbie (Bill) Oliver, Mark Snygg, Valerie Loy, Cindy (Ashoka) Bhargave, Rhonda Nelson and Kathy Snygg; also great-nieces and great-nephews. Ruth is predeceased by her brothers, Raymond Jr. (Evelyn), Charlie, John, Robert, Lyle, Lawrence and Roy; sister, Joan Kerl; brother-in-law, Robert "Lavern" Snygg; sisters-in-law, Lillian Snygg and Eunice Cook. Stanley E. "Stan" Wear

He was born on June 19, 1947, in Quincy, a son of Clarence "Jim" and Alice Kriegshauser Wear., Stan was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force. He enjoyed reading and cooking., Stan was a graduate of St. John Grade School and Christian Brothers High School. He received his bachelor degree in political science from Quincy College in 1974. He also received his surveying certificate from Quincy Technical Schools so that while attending college he worked full time for the City of Quincy in the engineering department. While in the engineering department he named a subdivision street after his daughter., Stan worked for several years for his brother, Ronald Wear, at R&W Antiques. He traveled to the East Coast and was able to network with many antique dealers from across the nation. It was during this time that Stan discovered his passion for the antique business. He later left Quincy for the East Coast and lived in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and worked there for Social Services. Later he moved to South Florida and worked for Broward County Social Services in the Fort Lauderdale office. After this he was employed by the Avanti Nursing Home in Boca Raton, Fla., as their office manager. Stan then returned to Quincy and was able to open his own antique shop in Palmyra, Mo. He attended many local and out of state auctions., Stan is survived by his mother, Alice Wear of Quincy; two children, Jennifer Benton and her husband, Rigoberto, of St. Paul, Minn., and James Wear of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kali Benton, Fabiana Vazquez and Alex Vazquez; and one brother, Ronald Wear and his wife, Wilma, of Taylor, Mo., He was preceded in death by his father., SERVICES: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the East Lake Room of the Fairfield Inn in Quincy. He served two tours in Vietnam in the, from 1966 to 1969, attaining the rank of corporal. He worked for Sieg Company and later the Parts House for 16 years, retiring in 1999.
