ALICE M. CROWELL

Alice M. Crowell, 96, died May 11, 2011, at Pinecrest Manor Nursing home, Mt. Morris, Ill. Alice was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Clare, the daughter of George and Nellie (Rich) Lambert., She was a DeKalb High School Graduate, class of 1932, and she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. She also earned a master's degree in Education from NIU in 1962., Alice married Frank Crowell on Jan. 1, 1941, in DeKalb; he died in 1971. Alice was a public school, in a one room school near Sycamore for three years, then she taught in the Mt. Morris Elementary Schools for a period of 32 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris. Alice was a member of the Dorcas Circle of the Lutheran Church, several quilting groups, the Ogle County Retired Teachers, the Mt. Morris Senior Center, serving on the board for ten years, and the current events club. Alice was also a world traveler. Alice and her friend, Ruth Balluff, were interested in barns, and after their retirement, they worked up a program, "Barns: a Disappearing Treasure," which was presented to many organizations., Alice is survived by her daughter, Carol Deemer of DeKalb; two grandsons, Rob (Lori) Deemer of Dunkirk, N.Y. and Chris (Debbie) Deemer of Salt Lake City, Utah; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Karissa and Caleb; and brothers, Milton Lambert and Walter (Janice) Lambert, both of DeKalb., She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; and two sisters, Mary Brooks and Eleanor Taylor., Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris with the Rev. Steven Erickson officiating. Visitation will be from Monday, May 23 in the church from 10 a.m. until the service time. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Memorials to L.O.M.C. or Mt. Morris Public Library.


 


 

ARVEL R. "OZZIE" DAVIS

Arvel R. "Ozzie" Davis, 89, of Sycamore, Ill., passed away Jan. 29, 2011, in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. Born Feb. 27, 1921, in Malta, Mont., to Jesse L. and Cora (Mathews) Davis, he married Carolyn M. Clarner March 29, 1941, in Clinton, Iowa. He married Velma L. Thyberg April 23, 1988, at Hillcrest Covenant Church, DeKalb., He was a member of Hillcrest Covenant Church, Sycamore, 1392,, Post 5768, Kishwaukee Archery Club, National Society Automotive Engineers and Sycamore Golf Club since 1950., He was the former president of DeKalb Industrial Management Club, and former Alderman of Sycamore's 1st Ward. He owned Ozzie's Snack Shop and was the original owner of The Pizza Wheel, both in Sycamore., He was a foreman and tool and die engineer employed by Ideal Industries in Sycamore. He was a real estate broker since 1966., He was a, veteran, serving as a Private 1st Class in the Army's 25th division in the South Pacific. He was a, and, recipient., Ozzie graduated DeKalb High School in 1939, and was an avid golfer., He is survived by his loving wife, Velma; three daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Yunek of Sycamore, Carole Bellamy of Medford, Wis., and Gayle (Alan) Volpp of Hampshire; twin sons, Randall (Nellie) Davis of Sycamore and Darrel Davis of Rockford; one stepson, Larry Thyberg of Bullhead City, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Dona (Cletus) O'Donnell of Madison, Wis., and Diane (Kenneth) Hightower of Auburn Hills, Mich.; one brother, Roy (Marilyn) Davis of DeKalb; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and cousins., He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carolyn in 1983; two stepgrandsons, Randy Thyberg and Ben Hightower; three brothers, Lloyd, Ward and Forest "Bud" Davis; and one son-in-law, Ray Bellamy., Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Hillcrest Covenant Church in DeKalb, Pastor Steve Larson officiating. She was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Millidgeville, a daughter of Edward Hatfield and Carrie Mae Strohecker Minnier. She married Elwood Meyer Aug. 24, 1940, in Millidgeville. He died Jan. 21, 1973., She graduated from Oregon High School and worked as a waitress and in a nursing home in Polo and at Dixon State School., She was a member of the Bureau Township Community Church, Church of Brethren, at Polo., Surviving are a daughter, Karen (Joel) VanDrew of Hopewell; two sons, Leon (Diane) Meyer of Quincy and Gary Meyer of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Peter) Chirchirillo of Hopewell, Michael (Rose) Meyer of Moody Air Force Base, Ga., Angela (Greg) Shelton of Quincy, Jonathan (Jennifer) Meyer of San Antonio, Texas, and Michelle (Evan) Lish of Quincy; and six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Lindsey, Ryan, Madison, Quinton and Kobe., She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Melvin "Bun," Harry, Allen and John; and two sisters, Annabelle Shilling and Alice Bushman., SERVICES: 10 a.m. Friday in the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Princeton. Brookins, Andre' L. Born on June 25, 1958 in Joliet, IL to Henry and Irma Brookins. He departed this life on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Silver Cross Hospital. Andre' accepted Christ at early age and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Andre' graduated from Joliet East High School in 1976. He attended Joliet Junior College and DePaul University. He was an accomplished musician and was organist for Mt. Olive Baptist Church as well as other churches. Andre' leaves his parents, brother Kevin (Melonese), niece, Courtney, nephew, Kyle, and three great nieces; Iyanna, Camara and Kyler as well as two aunts, Margaret Pickett and Rosetta (Odell) Flowers, four uncles, Nathaniel Brookins, Lamar Brookins, John Wesley and Robert (Wilma) Wesley, and a host of cousins to cherish his memories. CLARA RUTH BRILES

Clara Ruth Briles, 91, of DeKalb, passed away Saturday, May 7, under the tender care of the DeKalb County Hospice at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, DeKalb., Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Riverside, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, Ruth was the daughter of Robert Pierce and Ida (Hightower) Wilson. She married Worthie Elwood Briles on June 6, 1941, in Austin, Texas, while the two of them were attending the, . Later that summer, Ruth and Elwood received their Bachelors of Arts degrees in zoology from UT. They then went to the, at Madison to begin work on their advanced degrees. However, those efforts were set aside so that Elwood could serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II., Following World War II and the births of their first two children (Susan and David), Ruth and Elwood returned to Madison where they received their advanced degrees in immunogenetics in 1948 (Ruth: M.S., Elwood: Ph.D.). The family then moved to College Station, Texas, where Elwood was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M and where their younger daughter Sara was born. After the family moved to DeKalb in 1957, Ruth worked with Elwood at the DeKalb Agricultural Association as a research associate in immunogenetics research from 1958-1968. From 1968-1970, Ruth was an Instructor in biological sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb., From 1970-2000, Ruth again worked with Elwood, this time as a research associate for immunogenetics research in the Biology Department at NIU. On October 9, 2004, Elwood and Ruth were recognized for their contributions to avian genetics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture., Ruth was active in the American Association of University Women, volunteered at the Ellwood House and served for several years as the superintendent of the Sunday school at First Congregational Church in DeKalb., She is survived by her husband, Elwood; children, Susan Marie (Duane) Kniebes of Boulder, Colo., David Elwood (Marilyn Crain) Briles of Birmingham, Ala. and Sara (Richard Briles Moriarty) Briles of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Dustin Lincoln (Dana Churness) Briles Moriarty of Herbster, Wis., Rachel Florence (fiancé Duy Hoang) Briles of Austin, Texas and Travis Crain Briles of Boulder, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Linda (Kniebes) Kozak and Carrie (Steve) Swift (Kniebes) of Lisle, Ill. and Van Kniebes of Boulder; great-grandchildren, Wylder Lee and Olin Elwood Moriarty of Herbster; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews, including especially nephews, Jesse Rodman Wilson Jr. (Cathy) of Cold Springs, Nev., Hal (Claudia) Cochran of West Covina, Calif., Dale (Jacqueline) Cochran of San Clemente, Calif. and Roy (Thérèse) Krebs of Alexandria, Va., She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Robert Pierce Wilson II, Travis Hudson Wilson I, Ida Gertrude Krebs, Charlotte Josephine Cochran, Sarah Elizabeth Quinlan and Jesse Rodman Wilson Sr.; and her brothers-in-law, Connally Oran Briles, Van Gordon Briles and Jack David Briles., A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 5, in the Hearthside Room in the Visitors' Center of the Ellwood House, 509 W. Carnell Wright

Wright, Carnell Arthur Carnell Arthur Wright was born on July 29, 1955 to Arthur and Gladys Wright in Chicago, IL. He followed his identical twin Darnell by one minute. Eventually two more brothers, Sidney and Dennis were added to the family. In 1973, he graduated from George Westinghouse Vocational High School. He was successful in securing full time employment at the Social Security Administration and worked there for approximately 38 years. He held a management position as Disability Processing Specialist. On May 9, 2011, Carnell's family learned he had passed away due to natural causes. He leaves to cherish his memory three brothers, Darnell (Helen), Sidney, and Dennis (Deloris) and a host of extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Union Hill M.B. Church at 600 South Tripp Avenue in Chicago, IL with visitation at 11:00am, service 11:30am, and repast 1:00pm.

Charles A. "Chuck" Anderson

Born Dec. 17, 1964, in Quincy, Chuck was a son of John A. "Jack" and Mary Jane Neill Anderson., Chuck was a 1983 graduate of Quincy High School. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks fan. He especially loved sharing time with friends and family., He was employed as a supervisor at Midway Airlines in Chicago for 10 years until its closing. He then was employed as a security guard for Quincy Public Schools, Hannibal Regional Hospital and then at Blessing Hospital., Survivors include his father, John A. "Jack" Anderson of Mendon; two sisters, DeAnna Klauser and her husband, Joseph, of Quincy and Joan Masters of Quincy; a brother, John H. Anderson of St. Louis, Mich.; a nephew, Andrew Klauser of Chesterfield, Mo.; four nieces, Casey Anderson and Kayla Anderson, both of St. Louis, Mich; two nieces, Julie Aleman of San Antonio, Texas, and Brittany Masters of Quincy. Charles Brown

CHARLES E. 'CHUCK' BROWN, 60 ROCKFORD - Charles E. "Chuck" Brown, 60, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011, after a courageous fight due to complications from a brain aneurysm which occurred Dec. 5, 2010. Chuck was born April 8, 1951, in Racine, Wis., the son of Manny S. Brown and Jeanne (Levin) Brown, both of whom predeceased him. He was raised in Racine and attended Racine Horlick High School where he was elected president of the student council during his senior year. He attended Boston University and graduated with a BA in communication arts from the, -Madison. He later obtained his masters and doctoral degrees in educational administration from UW-Madison. He was a speech and journalism teacher and public relations specialist at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield, Wis., from 1971 to 1980 where the student newspaper was named the top school newspaper in the U.S. in 1978. He then became assistant to the executive vice-president of the Wausau Chamber of Commerce from 1981 to 1985, vice-president of a Wausau advertising agency from 1985 to 1987 and director of marketing/public relations at North Central Technical College in Wausau from 1987 to 2001. He moved to Rockford in 2002 as director of marketing for Rock Valley College and was the president of Rockford Business College from 2005 to 2007. He was director of communications and News Media at Rockford College from 2008 until the time of his illness. He won many professional awards throughout his career, too many to mention here. Chuck had an abiding interest in public service in general and local politics in particular. While in Schofield, he was an alderman for the City of Schofield, council president and interim mayor. Almost immediately upon arriving in Rockford, Chuck became actively involved as a member of the Northwest Community Center Board and was on the board from 2002 to 2009. He was its president for five years. In 2009, Chuck was elected to the Rockford Park District Board and was its secretary at the time of his illness. Chuck also had a continuing interest in teaching, serving as an adjunct instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon and then at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He was an active member of the Rockford Rotary and the Rockford Country Club. When younger, he participated in water skiing competitions and his love for the water continued unabated in his later years. One of his joys was boating on the Rock River. He was a die-hard Wisconsin Badgers fan, with season tickets to both UW football and men's basketball. He enjoyed traveling to Wisconsin's away games and bowl games. Survived by brother, Richard (Susan Herro); four nephews and nieces; and three step-daughters. Predeceased also by the love of his life, his wife, Becky, who passed away in August 2010. Chuck was an engaging fellow who effortlessly collected friends wherever he went. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched. Charles Eichhorn

DU QUOIN -- Charles Frank Eichhorn, 81, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, in Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin., Charles was a retired co-owner and treasurer of Du Quoin Iron Supply. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. He was a staff sergeant serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a 50-year member of Du Quoin, , where he had served 10 years as adjutant. He was also a 50-year member of Du Quoin American Legion. Charles was a member of NRA., He was born March 21, 1930, in Du Quoin, the son of Frank L. and Ruby Mae (Wilson) Eichhorn., He married Anna L. CARBONDALE -- Clara Stephens Bening, 81, also known as "CL" to her family and many friends, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, May 17, 2011, at her home., Clara was a lifelong resident of Carbondale. She graduated from CCHS and attended SIU as an art major., She married Leonard Bening in 1955 and had three children. They were married for 25 years., She was a devoted mother. Her children were the focus of her life and her proudest accomplishment. She was very active in CCHS through the Terrier's Booster Club during the 1970s and later with CCHS Education Fund., Clara's love of art ran through all aspects of her life. As a young woman, she painted several baptismal murals for churches in the area, including one that can still be seen at Walnut St. Baptist Church. Later in life, she helped her son and daughter-in-law at Bening Gallery and designed and painted many items and pictures over the years. She always had a smile and time to talk to everyone that came in the store. Clara never met a stranger. Many paintings and other art she created adorn homes all over the area., She is survived by her three children, Stephen of Hollywood, Fla., Lana Maudlin of Overland Park, Kan., and Jason of Fayetteville, Ga.; and by her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren., She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillian Stephens and by her brother, C.A. Donald C. Gephard, 86, of Live Oak, Fla., formerly of Aurora, Ill., passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011. He was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Grover Hill, Ohio, the son of LeRoy and Merita (Odiorne) Gephard., The family moved to Aurora in 1928. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School, graduating in 1939. He then attended East Aurora High School, graduating in 1943. Immediately upon graduation, he was inducted into the Armed Forces, serving in, as a Flight Engineer on B-24 heavy bombers with the 8th Air Force stationed in England. After being discharged, he attended Aurora College graduating in 1949. In 1954, he founded his own business, Donmar Distributors, Inc., and retired in 1985. On April 8, 1961, he married Ann Weber of Sugar Grove, who then joined him in his business. DAVID MARRIETT, 61 LOVES PARK - David Marriett, 61, of Loves Park passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Born Aug. 27, 1949, in Rockford to Ray Joseph and Jean (Campbell) Marriett. He graduated in 1967 from Harlem High School where he ran track and cross country. He attended Rock Valley College. In 1969 he was hired by Illinois Bell Telephone and saw many changes in the company by the time he retired in 2004 after 35 years of service. David married Ruth Moeller on June 10, 1972, in Sterling, together they had 2 children; son, Paul Matthew Marriett, and daughter, Elizabeth Ann Marriett. David took great pride in his children and was a strong influence on both graduation from college and a major influence on Paul attending and graduating from law school. He loved the outdoors, was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the NRA. He enjoyed spending vacations in Hayward, Wis., and anywhere he could spend a day fishing, and always looked forward to opening days in May and October. David was an avid duck hunter and enjoyed hunting with his brother-in-law, Mark Moeller. Grandma Edna was well known at the orchard for her cider donuts. Edna was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Waterman. CARBONDALE – Earl Franklin Winfield Jr., 83, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, in Veteran's Care Center in Anna., Earl was born May 4, 1928, in Carbondale to Earl Franklin Winfield Sr. and Dorothy Beatrice (Penrod) Winfield., He married Lillian Shelton on Jan. 26, 1952. She passed away July 11, 2006. Then he married Shelby "Sally" Jean Keefner on Aug. 27, 2007. She survives., Survivors include one daughter, Gail C. Potter of Elkville; two stepdaughters, Theresa Henry of Carterville and Pamela Russell of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepson, Bill Walters of Carbondale; one granddaughter, Lisa Potter of De Soto; one stepbrother, Carl Hagler of Elkville; and one sister, Pat Stearns of Marion. He is also survived by seven stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren., He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Tommy Potter., Earl served his country during World War II in the U.S. Air Force. He also worked for ICRR for more than 40 years and had also served as the local chairman for Brotherhood of Trainmen. Earl was a lifelong member of, and was a member of Masonic Lodge in Carbondale. He was of Protestant faith and will be missed dearly by his family and friends., Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 20, in Meredith Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Cherry officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale with military honors. He preceded her in death., Edna was a member of First Baptist Church, Shelbyville, Mo. She worked at Trio Manufacturing, Griggsville, as well as Quincy Speaker, Motorola and Paper Box Mfg., Quincy. She loved spending time with her family, playing cards and Scrabble. Her hobbies were watercolor painting, gardening and traveling., Survivors include four children, Connie (Norman) Miller of Hannibal, Mo., Gilbert Hoover of Columbia, Beverly (Dan) Mahaffey of Shelbyville, Mo., and Nancy (John) Freeman of Pittsfield; 12 grandchildren, Kathy Dunbar, Brenda Smith, Kevin Garner, Bridget Thompson, Holly Coates, Tamie Nelson, Pamela Ketchem, Brett Mahaffey, Trina Hawkins, Scott Osment, Kelly Wade, and Lisa Brockman; 23 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Koontz was born on June 4, 1941 in Stewardson, IL, the son of Horace Dale and Wilma Brandt Koontz, Sr. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1959. He married Arlene Bauer on May 29, 1960 in Strasburg, IL. Dale began working for Norge in Effingham, IL and then Biehler's Hatchery in Windsor, IL. In 1966 they moved to a farm near Lakewood, IL. Dale was a dairy farmer for Prairie Farms Dairy from 1966-1986 and a grain and livestock farmer until his retirement in 2004. He had a private pilot's license for many years and was a member of the Flying Farmers Club. Dale was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed watching his granddaughter play softball. Helen Maclean Sherbenou, 90, of DeKalb, Ill., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center., Born Nov. 28, 1920, in Leon, Kan., to John Lester and Olive Pearl (Doughty) Maclean, she was the oldest of four children, with siblings John, Jim and Mary preceding her in death. After graduating from Leon High School and attending junior college in Eldorado, Kan., she attended Wesley Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kan., graduating with honors in 1942. She worked in Wichita as a nurse and surgical assistant, living with roommates who became life-long friends. When the war ended, she enrolled at Kansas University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology., While at KU, she met her husband-to-be, Edgar L. "Vern" Sherbenou. They were married Aug. 24, 1947, at her parents' home in Leon, Kan., on a day so hot that the candles melted without being lit. They had two sons, Edgar Vern and Jerre Wyn. Living in Lawrence, Kan., and Houston, Texas, they finally settled in DeKalb in 1959. As her children grew older, she practiced nursing in both hospital and clinical settings, and attended NIU School of Nursing. As one of the school's first Masters Candidates, she received her degree in 1969 and joined the faculty as a nursing instructor. During her career, she was active in professional organizations and civic service. Professionally, she was president of the Illinois Nurses Association, active in the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society of Nursing., Civically, she and Vern were founding members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb and dedicated life-long members; she served on the DeKalb County Board of Health; and served a long time on the Board of Barb City Manor. In 1978, accompanying Vern to Thailand on his Fulbright Scholarship, Helen started a program with the local nursing professionals of clinical care and vaccination for the rural villages around Ching Mai. She retired from NIU in 1989 and enjoyed traveling and family and friends., She is survived by both sons, Ed (wife, Joan) and Jerre; and six grandchildren, Ed's sons, Tim, Kyle and Brad, and Jerre's children, Alyce, Evelyn and Chris., She was predeceased by her husband, Vern, in 2007., A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. He had a wonderful support group in Phoenix were he made many friends over the years. He loved to pan for gold out west and travel to Laughlin to gamble a little bit. He also loved his "roundup" trips. He will be greatly missed by the Phoenix group of friends, as well as family here back home in the Chicago area. He was nicknamed "Chicago John". Allan and Agnes Larson. He was united in marriage to Marcia Sponholtz on June 21, 1958. After Marcia's passing, he was united in marriage to Linda Kaiser on August 7, 2000., Ken graduated from Batavia High School. He received a B.A. from Cornell College and an M.S. degree in geology from Miami University. He joined his father's company, Larson-Becker Company of Batavia, as vice president in 1960 after serving two years in the U.S., Ken was vice president of the Batavia Jaycees, a board member of the Harris Bank of Batavia and a member of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Batavia School Board from 1967 to 1976 and was president from 1972 to 1976. He was a founding member and the first elected chairman of the Batavia Foundation for Education Excellence when it started in 1985. DECATUR - Lois June Powless Harned, 83, of Decatur, died at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in Decatur Memorial Hospital with her family at her side. Lois was retired from Kelly Foods. She married Donald Harned on April 26, 1974. They recently celebrated their 37th anniversary. Don has been a loving, caring husband, and he has taken great care of her as her health has deteriorated. Lois is survived by her husband Don; son, Larry Steele (Phyllis) of Iowa City, Iowa; daughters, Barb Bolin (Leon) of Decatur, Karen Steele of Clinton, Sharon Hartsfield of Tampa, Florida, Cathy Scheller (Stu) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Joan Price (Jack) of Windsor, Colorado; 16 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry; her parents; sisters, Leta, Velma, & Phyllis; and brothers, "Cy" (Vernon), Merle, & Berle. Don and Lois loved traveling to visit children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in Florida, Ohio, Iowa, and Colorado. Lois enjoyed telling stories of her experiences of living through the depression and her work at the Illinois Central Railroad during World War II. Lois took most opportunities to turn a situation into a celebration. She enjoyed a good picnic, especially if it involved a family reunion. She collected bells from each state that she had visited. Although macular degeneration had diminished most of her vision, pictures of family and places she had visited were among her most prized possessions. Lois passed on family history through her stories, and she loved to laugh. She will be greatly missed. GALESBURG - Lois Maria Nelson Brown, 76, Paxton, formerly of Galesburg, passed away May 18, 2011, at Illinois Knights Templar Home in Paxton., She was born Oct. 21, 1934, in Chicago to Wesley and Theola Truitt Nelson. At the time of her birth, her parents were hosting family visitors who had come for the Chicago World's Fair., She spent her early years near Henderson Grove, Henderson and Ontario in the Galesburg area. When she was 11 years of age, her family moved to Colorado, where she lived on four different farms in the Denver area., In 1951, her family returned to Henderson Grove. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1952, one of the top students in her class., On June 8, 1952, she married Charles Brown. They divorced in 1974. She is survived by their five children, Sandra (Robert) Sherman, New Providence, N.J., Linda (Morris) Tammen, Thawville, John (Michele) Brown, Johnston, Iowa, James (Joan) Brown, Galesburg, and Joseph (Lauren) Brown, Huntington, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren. She also is survived by her mother, Theola Nelson, who resides at Illinois Knights Templar Home, and her brother, Carl (Jan) Nelson, Springdale, Ark. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Nelson, and her father, Wesley L. Nelson., Lois was an honors graduate of Carl Sandburg College, where she received her degree in 1972. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg until her retirement in 1996. She was an active member for many years at Coldbrook Christian Church and later Messiah Lutheran Church and served both churches in a variety of capacities, including the Henderson Women's Club, WELCA, the church choir and church council. She also served as chaplain of the Illinois State Grange. She was a member of Amnesty International and Greenpeace., Lois was a devoted daughter and an exceptional mother and grandmother who loved to make quilts for family and friends. The memories of gathering together for Grandma's special late night "tea times" are cherished by each of her grandchildren., Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove. LONA P. KNISKERN, 76 FREEPORT -Lona P. Kniskern, 76, of Freeport died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at FHN Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 31, 1935, in Chicago, the adopted daughter of Helen and Nevin Slamp. She graduated from Freeport Senior High School in 1953, and went on to study at Carroll College in Wisconsin where she met, and married Philip W. Kniskern on July 10, 1954. Lona was executive director of the Stephenson County Senior Center from 1977 until her retirement in 2007. She was im-mensely proud of the services the Center provides, and truly grateful for the staff and many volunteers who helped it become an award-winning agency. Her commitment to United Way was second only to her commitment to the Center. During her years leading the Center as a United Way Member Agency, she always championed the United Way (UW), speaking at campaign events, supporting other UW events, serving on UW committees and being first in line to assist UW in any way she could. Lona started as a self-employed piano teacher giving lessons in her home. A member of Embury United Methodist Church, she lived her love for music as both a member and director of the choirs for many years. She was a dele-gate to the Illinois White House Conferences on Aging, Libraries and Information Services. Through the years she volunteered for the PTA, Pretzel Band Boosters, Community Concert Association, Project Headstart, Em-bury United Methodist Church, and was a Pink Lady for Freeport Memorial Hospital. Lona received many personal and agency-related honors including the 1999 Freeport YWCA Women of Excellence Jean Johnson Farrar Social Service award, 1996 Sid Granet Aging Network Achievement Award for an Individual, 1991, Citation for Patriotic Service to the Community, 1999 Governor's Unique Achievement Award for the Elder Abuse Unit, 1996 Outstanding Illi-nois Senior Center from the Association of Illinois Senior Centers, 1991 Illinois Department of Reha-bilitative Services Director's Award, and the 1988 Community Achievement Award from the Illinois Department on Aging. Upon her retirement, her many contributions and accomplishments were recognized with resolutions passed by the State of Illinois 95th General Assembly, and the Freeport City Council. Lona's current affiliations included member and past president of the Northwest Il-linois Regional Health Plan Board of Directors, Freeport Kiwanis Club, and FEMA local board. Lona loved to gather and bind her memories in the form of photos, genealogies, notes and lists. She enjoyed concerts, plays, amateur photography, cross stitch, reading, but mostly being around people, especially her family and grandchildren, Zoe and Jared. In her own words, she reveals the love she had for family, friends and those she served, "It is a precious gift to work with people. Kind words, expressions of gratitude, smiles, knowing we made a dif-ference for good in a person's life – it doesn't get better than that." Surviving are husband, Phil of Freeport; sons, Peter W. Marie Alder Rolfing, 95, of Durango, Colo., died May 9, 2011, at home and in the company of her children., Marie was born and raised in Wilmette, Ill., and attended New Trier High School, where she met her future husband, Bill Rolfing. While Bill was at Williams College, Marie attended Chevy Chase College in Washington D.C. Bill and Marie married in 1941. Their family, eventually totaling six children, was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sycamore., One of the dominant activities in her life was being outdoors and portaging canoes along with the family in the Boundary Waters/Quetico canoe country. Marie was an active member of the Federated Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Sycamore., Bill and Marie moved to Durango in 1993 and built a house in the Sweetwater Ranch area where they enjoyed many family gatherings. Two brothers Ray and Carl (Lori) Belford and two sisters Barbara Zachman and Shirley (Eldon) Oppe. Six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceded in death by her first husband Tom Ewenson and her second husband Richard Uran, parents Delbert and Charlotte (nee Eckley) Belford; three brothers Eugene Belford, Sidney Belford and Delbert Belford and a sister Pauline Schultz. Huff, 85, of Richmond, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Lakeland Health Care Center in Elkhorn, Wis., He was born Oct. 27, 1925, on the family farm in Spring Grove to the late George and Anna (Freund) Huff. He worked on the farm with his father and brother until entering the U.S. Army in February 1954. TOM G. CROSS, 64 ELDORA, Iowa - Tom G. Cross, 64, of Eldora, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, from natural causes. Born Dec. 22, 1946, in Eldora, son of Gene Cross and Alice Alexander. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1965. Veteran of the U.S., serving in Germany from 1967 to 1969. He was employed by Coil Oil Co. of Rockford, Ill., from 1970 to 1986, the cities of State Center and Liscomb as a policeman, the Marshall County Secondary Road Department from 1980 to 1995 serving as the employee union president for several years, and the Iowa Veterans Home from 1995 to 1999 also serving as union vice-president for a time. In 2003 Tom became ordained as a minister in Georgia and preached at several church's which he was very proud of. Tom had most recently been volunteering at the Lodge Redemption Center in Eldora. Member of Montaque Lodge No. 117 at Eldora and had been a Master Mason since 1969, attaining 32Ëš in York Rites and 32Ëš in Scottish Rites, which is an honor to be 32Ëš in both. Member of Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed tinkering on cars, attending coffee time at Ahoy Fountain, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are children, Brian Cross (Ashley Wills) of Melbourne and Gidget (Matthew) Trask of Renwick; sisters, Beth (Dean) Buck of Rhodes, Penny (Walter) Drew of Kite, Ga., and Tina (Leonard) Headrick of Kite; brothers, Jerry (Flora) Cross of Polo, Ill., Craig Cross of Haldane, Ill., Gregory Bachman of Rockford, Ill., Paul Stressman of Woodward and Gene (Rosie) Cross of Kite; grandchildren, Chad Cross and Keaton Trask; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her 26 years of teaching included everything from a one-room school house, a grade school class in LaGrange, high school at Malta, finishing with teaching second grade and then first, at Lee Elementary. She met her husband, Maurice, while teaching in Malta and they enjoyed 53 years together. WILLIAM ROBERT PECKHAM, 84 ROCKTON - William Robert Peckham, 84, of Rockton died at 1:20 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, in his home. Born June 16, 1926, in Beloit, Wis., the son of Robert and Mary (Diderich) Peckham. He was a lifelong resident of the Rockton area. Married Phyllis Sutherland in Beloit. He was employed as a machinist by Fairbanks for 42 years. Veteran of, , serving in the, . Member of the Quarter Century Club. Graduated from South Beloit High School. Survivors include sons, Thomas Peckham of South Beloit and Charles Peckham of Rockford; daughter, Lynn Harrington of Fox Lake; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Janie (Bob) Clark of Clinton, Wis. Predeceased by his parents; wife; daughter-in-law, Linda; sister, Ruth; and granddaughter, Rebekah. Graveside ceremonies at 1 p.m. Monday, May 23, in Rockton Township Cemetery, 600 West St., Rockton. Wilma Bridges

TAMMS -- Wilma Margaret (Dodd) Bridges, 79, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011, at her residence., Wilma was born May 16, 1932, in Granite City, a daughter of the late Raphael Gray "Jack" Dodd and Myrtha Clyde (Brasher) Dodd., Wilma was a member of Elco Baptist Church; member of WMU Church training group; a member of the Sunday school class; and a Cub Scout leader. She was a retired truck driver with Sam Tankley Ohio Pacific Trucking Co., and was a former telephone receptionist for Jones Funeral Homes at Tamms and Villa Ridge., Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard Bridges, and two grandsons, Shawn Bridges and Michael Jason Bridges., Survivors include two sons, Eddie Bridges and family of Fredericktown, Mo.; and Jackie Bridges and family of Tamms; a sister, Imogene Dodson and family of Indianapolis., Services for Wilma M. Bridges will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in Jones Funeral Home in Tamms with the Rev. Buddy Walls officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery rural Dongola.
