Loretta Anne Sandberg

CRYSTAL LAKE – Loretta Anne Sandberg, 72, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 2, 2011, at her home., She was a true country girl, born March 11, 1939, on a farm in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, the second of seven children of Douglas and Grace McIvor. She married the true love of her life, Denzel Sandberg, on Dec. 28, 1957, in her hometown., She followed her husband to Crystal Lake in 1966, when he took a job as a pilot for TWA. Together they raised four exceptionally beautiful children there, all the while maintaining her own striking good looks. This in turn caused her husband to flirt with her incessantly throughout their 50 years of marriage, to which she always blushed and said, "Oh Denny, stop it!", She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, whether it be her own or her adopted one at Mama Rini's. She always could be counted on to attend every special event and be there for every hospital stay to provide encouragement and love, whether it was for her spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings or friends. She relished every minute spent with loved ones, whether it be her much anticipated yearly trip to meet her sister Marlene in Las Vegas, her many trips with various grandchildren in tow, her yearly vacation to Oklahoma, complete with a stop in Branson to see "the cute Elvis," her standing date with Auntie Johnnie for coffee and soaps, or taking her family out to eat at Irene's., An experienced and expert, some might even say "professional," shopper, she loved nothing more than strategically planning and finding that perfect gift for every birthday, anniversary, Christmas or other occasion that she could find an excuse to spoil her family and friends. As each grandchild got their license, it became tradition to go on fun shopping trips with "Gramma," which always involved picking out presents that she kept for months and impeccably wrapped so that even the recipient who picked it out had forgotten what treasures lay inside. When no grandchildren were around to accompany her on shopping trips, she made great use of her TV and telephone in becoming quite the customer on QVC and HSN, to the point of saying of the hosts, "those people are like my family!", She was an exceptional crafter, accomplished in everything from knitting to sewing to cross-stitch. She also was a great cook and baker, whose famous carrot cake will be sorely missed by all who have tasted it. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and passed down her unwavering religious faith to her children and grandchildren. However, above all it will be her beautiful personality and giving spirit that will be missed and remembered most., She is survived by four children and 18 grandchildren, Denzel Kurt Sandberg of Enderby, British Columbia, and his children, Jenny, Jeremy, Katie, Sarah and Jeffrey; Kim (Dale) Kowalski of Hebron, and their children, Amberley, Dylan, Tanner, Kiaya, Harley, Keegan and Blade; Karen Kowalski of Crystal Lake, and her children, Kelsey and Klansey; and Lawrence Kelly (Jill) Sandberg of Sand Springs, Okla., and their children, Kenzie, Julian, Holly and Nicole; four brothers, Kelly (Joan) McIvor of Lockport, Manitoba, Keith (Dorothy) McIvor of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Bud McIvor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Johnny (Shannon) McIvor of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; and two sisters, Joyce McIvor of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, and Marlene (Orest) Kowall of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba., She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Denzel Sandberg., The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1023 S. McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake. Interment will be in Windridge Memorial Park, next to her beloved husband., In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or, For information, call the funeral home at 815-459-1760. Mark Beaubien Jr.

BARRINGTON HILLS – State Rep. Mark Beaubien Jr., 68, of Barrington Hills, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 5, 2011., He was born Oct. 30, 1942, in Waukegan. He married Dee Prola Beaubien on Aug. 15, 1964, in Springfield. Together they raised two sons and have five grandchildren. Dee was his wife for 47 years, his best friend of more than 50, and the source of much of his inspiration., He was an assistant Republican leader, serving as state representative since his appointment Oct. 22, 1996, to fill a vacancy. He subsequently was re-elected to six additional two-year terms., Before becoming a lawmaker, Rep. Beaubien served as a member of the Lake County Board from 1992-96, during which time he also served as Cuba Township supervisor. He enjoyed a successful career in both law and banking, quickly emerging as a community leader through his professional experience and civic involvement., Rep. Beaubien's expertise in law and finance proved a tremendous asset as the House Republicans' chief budget negotiator. In this role, he became a leading advocate for fiscal responsibility., In the General Assembly, Rep. Beaubien had many accomplishments, too many to list, but some of his proudest moments included spearheading initiatives to make seatbelt enforcement a primary reason for law enforcement to stop a vehicle; voting with his convictions in support of the recent Civil Union Bill; passing a bill that provided Municipal Pension Reform; leading the charge to save Round Lake schools; and playing an active role in the Sportsman's Caucus and issues related to hunting and other open space issues., Rep. Beaubien was a confident man who refused to limit his ideals to those of his generation, embracing the timeless values of honor, respect, loyalty and integrity while rejecting its occasional intolerance and prejudice. He knew instinctively that these fundamental rights that he both cherished and demanded were meaningless unless they were enjoyed by all men and women. This principled leadership made it easy for him to support issues and causes that were unpopular within his party, including the fundamental rights of women and the gay community. His easy wit, quick smile and unpretentious wisdom made him well-liked by even those with whom he disagreed. His was an intelligence without narcissism, and his popularity was enhanced by the fact that he did not seek it. If asked why he was one of the few Republican supporters of the Civil Union Bill, he would respond with humility and simplicity that it was simply time and we should all "live our own lives and speak our own truths." His legacy is in his convictions and values., He was dedicated to community service throughout his life. His civic activities over the years included involvement with the, Committee on Athletics and Recreation (1988-92), the board of directors of Buehler YMCA in Palatine (1971-93), the board of directors at Northwest Community Hospital (1978-91), a member of the John Evans Club of Northwestern University (1988-present), the Barrington Area Community Center Task Force (1993-95), the Barrington Area Seniors Task Force (1994-97), the Founders' Committee of the Ela Area YMCA (1994-97), and a member of the Lake County and Illinois State Bar Associations., Rep. Beaubien received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1964, and his Juris Doctorate from the Northwestern University School of Law in 1967., Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Dee; his sons, Mark and Bob and spouses Kelly and Mary; and his grandchildren, Annie, Bobby, Ella, Marco and Luciana., The visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E.
