ABERT SIDNEY KING

Albert Sidney King, 71, of Winchester, Tenn., departed this life for God's loving embrace on Friday, April 29, 2011, at Harton Regional Medical Center, in Tullahoma, Tenn. Born in 1939 in Pampa, Texas, to John T. King and Bonnie Lamb King, Albert attended West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M) receiving a Bachelor of Arts (1962) and a master's of Business Administration (1966)., He served as a reservist in the National Guard from 1962-1966 and was stationed in Georgia and Texas, obtaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He obtained his Doctorate of Business Administration (D.B.A.) in 1970 from Texas Tech University, and began his professorial career specializing in management and industrial relations at Kansas State University. After teaching abroad at U.S. military bases in Germany and England (1974), he joined the faculty at Northern Illinois University (1974) where he taught management science, human resources and strategic management., He was a prolific scholar, publishing over 125 articles in top tier research journals and multiple book chapters, and he attended professional conferences too numerous to count, even as he served as a journal reviewer and on editorial boards. He served as director and chair of the Management Department in the College of Business at NIU, where he remained until he retired., Upon retirement, he moved to Tennessee and became a member of the Christian Lighthouse Full Gospel Church of Tullahoma., He is survived by his wife, Linda and son Arren King of Winchester; daughters, Kimi King of Denton, Texas and Karisa King of San Antonio, Texas; stepsons, Chris Mannes of Estill Springs, Tenn. and Tim Mannes of Cortland; grandchildren, Jason Mannes, Marlene Meernik and Parker King; brother, John A. King of Pampa, Texas; nephews, John Hardy King of Pampa, Stanley King of Sardis, Tenn., and Mark Breeding of Little Rock, Ark.; and a niece, Heidi Bettis of Little Rock., A memorial dinner is being scheduled in Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of the following: Christian Lighthouse Full Gospel Church, Alcoholics Anonymous (Winchester, Tenn. Alice A. Heslop, 88 Loving Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma and Great-great-grandma ROCKFORD - Alice A. Heslop, 88, of the rural Rockford-Winnebago area died Friday night, May 6, 2011, in her home, surrounded by her loving family after a short illness. Born March 1, 1923, in Platte, S.D., the daughter of Nicholas and Sophia (Jansen) DeWall. Graduated from Leeds (Iowa) High School in 1941. Alice was married to her high school sweetheart, Merlin W. Heslop, for 68 years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Alice worked for J.C. Penney for more than 20 years and was an active member of Evergreen Covenant Church. She loved crocheting and gardening and truly enjoyed all the family gatherings. Alice is lovingly survived by sons, Dewey (Lois) Heslop of Pecatonica, Don Heslop of Lake Summerset, David (Shirley) Heslop of Winnebago and Gary (Diane) Heslop of Rockford; daughters, Cindy (Bob) Hunter of Pecatonica and Karen (Larry) Anderson of Rockford; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson; sister, Mae (Kenneth) Freitag; sister-in-law, Alice Uphouse; and several nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; husband on Dec. 21, 2007; grandson, Douglas Heslop; guardian great-grandson, David Riffe Jr.; daughter-in-law, Pat Peterson; brothers, Duane, Milton and Vernon DeWall; sisters, Leona and Beatrice DeWall; and nephews, Michael and William Freitag. Angelita Espiritu "Angie" Haulk

She was born on March 7, 1941, in the town of Bacoor, Cavite, in the Philippines. She was born to Carlos Espiritu and Narcisa Maggay Espiritu. She was one of six children., As a young woman, Angie was a nanny and lived in Hong Kong and London as well as traveling to various parts of the world. Angie made Macomb her home in 1978 and was married to David Haulk. Later they were divorced. Angie was an employee of McDonough District Hospital for more than 24 years., One brother, Augusto Espiritu, and one sister, Stella Espiritu, of the Philippines survive. She is also survived by a very special niece, with whom she was very close, Raquel Madrelejo, and her family of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and many nieces and nephews in various parts of the world., She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister., SERVICES: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home, Macomb, with Monsignor Richard Pricco conducting. ANN HAWTHORNE HUMPHREYS, 58 ROCKFORD - Ann Hawthorne Humphreys, 58, is now singing at the feet of Jesus, her "Great Reward." After having faithfully run her race in this life to the glory of her Savior, Ann entered His presence Wednesday, May 4, 2011, surrounded by her beloved family. Born Feb. 19, 1953, in Shreveport, La., to Amos and Helen Hawthorne. Ann grew up in Lufkin, Texas, and graduated magna cum laude with a BA in special education from the, in Austin. She married Steve Humphreys on Nov. 29, 1975, and they lived most of their married lives in Rockford. She filled her life with the people and activities she loved, and she taught others to do the same. Ann, first and foremost a committed wife and mother, taught all four of their children at home, was a freelance artist, teacher and tutor, a youth leader in her church and was involved in Starlight Theatre for more than 20 years. She was an inspiration to all who knew her as she continued to live a full, joy-filled life despite a five-year battle with cancer. She will be deeply missed by husband, Steve; children, Stefanie, Sarah, Samantha and John; and son-in-law, David Brickey. She was also surrounded by the love of her grandchildren, Sofia, Ava, Camille and Jude; brother, Michael Hawthorne, and sister, Gayle Bender and their families; parents-in-law, John and Sally Humphreys; sisters-in-law, JoAnne Jury, Tammy Johnston and Elizabeth Humphreys; brother-in-law, Ben Humphreys; and their spouses and families. Anne C. Fairchild, 90 ROCKFORD - Anne C. Fairchild, 90, of Rockford died at 2:29 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, in Provena St. Anne Center. Born June 12, 1920, in Chicago, the daughter of Michael Charles and Anna Voss Zimmer. Graduated sixth in her class in 1942 from Northwestern University, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Omega sorority. Married James Fairchild on Feb. 13, 1943, in Chicago; he predeceased her. She married Lt. Col. Edwin A. Lutz on May 18, 1996, in Rockford. She was a member of Cathedral of St. Peter and had served as the vice president of Catholic Women's League. She began her career in research and development for AB Dick Co. She spent time raising her children and then returned to her profession as the personnel manager of Clifford Berg and Associates. She retired in 1976 after devoting 12 years as the executive director of the Rock River Valley Council of Girl Scouts. Anne was a Brownie and Cadet Scout leader, member of the Winnebago County Garden Club and was on the board of directors of OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center's Auxiliary. She was a member of the Pink Ball committee and served as its treasurer. She was also a member of the Newcomers Club and was president of the Jessie I. Spafford department of the Rockford Woman's Club. She served as president of St. Bridget Church Mother's Club and was on the board of Cathedral of St. Peter Home and School Association. She was also a member of the Personnel Club of Rockford and was president for several terms of Quota International Club of Rockford as well as being treasurer of the board of directors of NIAAA. Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col. Edwin Lutz; children, Patricia Anne Evan, Michael James (Joan) Fairchild, Steven William (Sally) Fairchild and Mark Joseph (Margaret) Fairchild; grandchildren, Mary Anne Evan, Joan Marie Evan, Kelly Fairchild and Caroline Fairchild; and her sister, Eleanor "Kay" Kate. Predeceased by her parents; infant daughter, Veronica Martha; brothers, Charles and Edward Zimmer; and son-in-law, John M. Evan. arlene a. nicolls, 63 DELMAR, Iowa - Arlene A. Nicolls, of Delmar, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in the University of Iowa Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1948, in Sioux City to Arlo and Virginia (Ryan) Witters. She grew up in Sioux City and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, later Heelan High School and graduated from Harlem High School in Machesney Park, Ill. She married Tom Nicolls on Nov. 4, 1967, in Sioux City. Arlene also resided in Kirkland and Rockford, Ill. She moved to Delmar in 2006 when she retired from Hamilton Sundstrand in Rockford after being employed for more than 25 years. She was a current member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Delmar. Arlene enjoyed reading, bird watching, gardening, crossword puzzles, canning and was an avid Cubs fan. She cherished being with her grandchildren, and living life to the fullest. Survivors include husband, Tom of Delmar; daughter, Kim (Doug) Livingston of Loves Park, Ill.; son, Brian (Maureen) Nicolls of Stillman Valley, Ill.; grandchildren, Nicole and Nolan Livingston; brother, Edward (Loreth) Witters; and numerous nieces and nephews. AZALA 'SALLY' MICHAELS-CUMMINGS, 94 devoted wife, mother and grandmother ROCKFORD - Azala "Sally" Michels-Cummings, 94, was embraced by the Lord and taken to her forever home Friday, May 6, 2011, in Provena Cor Mariae Center. Born July 22, 1916, in Bellevue, Iowa, the daughter of Mary and Harry Michels. She attended Bellevue schools, graduating in 1934. Sally worked at her hometown grocer and was a telephone operator. Sally spent the World War II years living life to the fullest and enjoying many dances with family and friends. She married Clifford Cummings, a high school classmate, on June 10, 1947. Together they had two children and traveled to landmark sites in the U.S., enjoyed camping and family get-togethers. After retirement, they lived five months out of the year in Harlingen, Texas, where they had a winter home. Sally was quick to make friends and also gave service with a smile at Gill's Diner in Loves Park for many years until her retirement. She was full of spunk and would do anything for her family, especially her grandchildren, whether it was making forts, root beer floats or a walk down to Top Cone for a banana split. Member of Grace Lutheran Church and in her younger years belonged to many women's circles and Bible study groups. She enjoyed knitting afghans, cooking, gardening, playing cards, the Chicago Cubs and just being on the go. Survived by son, Terry Cummings; daughter, Vicki Bilodeau; grandchildren, Nicole (David) Traum, Jason (Diane) Bilodeau, Jessica Johnson, Joia Goforth and Jennifer (Shawn) Smith; great-grandchildren, Megan and Logan Traum, Amber Bilodeau, Jeremiah and Lucy Johnson, Gavin and Brooke Goforth. Predeceased by her parents and husband, Clifford Cummings. Frazier of Ursa and Glenna (Richard) Henderson of Plainville; two brothers, Harold (Diana) Bowen and Richard (Cathy) Bowen of Quincy; and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews., He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Marion J., Kenneth E., Howard and Michael K. CHARLES 'BUD' ROBERT RANDLES, 76 DAVIS - Charles "Bud" Robert Randles, 76, of Davis died at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at home after a short illness. Born Oct. 13, 1934, in Brodhead, Wis., the son of Helen (Drevdahl) Randles. Lived for the past 20 years in Lake Summerset, moving there from Rockford. Bud attended high school in Beloit, Wis., and received his GED in Rockford. He married the former Leona Kincannon on April 17, 1954, in Cherry Valley. She was the love of his life, and throughout their 57 years of marriage they grew in their love for each other and for the Lord. He was employed as a technical auditor by National Lock, Sterling Cutter Tools, Rockwell and Textron for a combined 50 years. Bud was a member of Elim Baptist Church in Rockford for 30 years and a member of Faith Community Church for the past 20 years. Bud's life was centered around his love of his heavenly Father, his family and friends. He enjoyed being with youth and for many years was an AWANA leader in church and coached fast-pitch softball for youth. Friends of his children were treated as part of his family, sometimes even living with them. He often was sought out for fatherly advice. During her courageous fight against breast cancer, Chaz still focused on others instead of herself, including walking for Autism awareness. He was also a member of the Elks and he and his wife loved to dance. Ed farmed his family's farm all his adult life, raised purebred Duroc hogs and traveled with his wife all over the United States exhibiting their purebred hogs. At one time she had more than 200 violet plants in many different colors and types. Evelyn was a member of the Four Rivers African Violet Club in Paducah. She also enjoyed raising birds and had been known to keep more than 100 canaries in her home at a time., Evelyn was also a gifted artisan. She enjoyed making crocheted items, knitting and quilting. FRANKLIN CHARLES HERBERT, 77 HAUGEN, Wis. - Franklin Charles Herbert, 77, formerly of Loves Park, Ill., died peacefully Wednesday, March 23, 2011, in his home on Bear Lake. He was born May 3, 1933, in Rockford, Ill., to Charles and Ruth (Bogda) Herbert. He married Nancy Stephens on March 25, 1961, at Grace Lutheran Church in Loves Park, Ill. After graduating from Harlem High School in 1951, Frank worked for Patterson Lumber Co. He enlisted in the U.S., in 1953 during the, and was proud to serve his country in the Army Signal Corps until he was honorably discharged in 1955. He worked for Butter Hardware Co. for 22 years, then IKO Roofing Co. for 12 years. He and Nancy retired to Bear Lake in November 1995. A good Christian man, Frank was a long-time, active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Loves Park and more recently a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, where he sang in the church choir. He was a fan of the Chicago Bears and enjoyed fishing, reading, mowing the lawn and working in his yard. He remained active throughout his life, exercising or walking five miles a day. He and Nancy enjoyed spending winters in Orange Beach, Ala. Frank especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he will be remembered and dearly missed as a wonderful husband and father. Survived by wife, Nancy of Haugen; children, Lori (Jeff) Granath of Machesney Park, Ill., Michael Herbert of Madison and Mark Herbert of Loves Park; grandchildren, Emily Granath, Paige (Cal) Ferry, Brett Granath and Anthony Herbert; sister, Dru (Bill) Lux of Haugen; and brother, Gary (Jane) Herbert of Lemont, Pa. Born Oct. 31, 1924, in Naylor, Mo., the daughter of Joseph and Lillie B. Widmer Wallace. Married Edward Levings on April 23, 1946, in Fairview, Kan.; he died Oct. 30, 1988. She had previously been employed by Edwards Bakery. Member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand. Jean loved the springtime and especially loved gardening and being outside. She was always a very hard worker in anything that she did. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren, and her family was everything to her. Dow, Geraldine Daggett Age 90. Entered eternal life on April 20, 2011, at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home. A life-time Joliet resident, she was born in Joliet on October 15, 1920. She was a graduate of St. Raymond Grade School and St. Francis Academy. Gerry was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. While her health permitted, she was actively involved in her parish, a faithful witness to its history and traditions. She is survived by her three sons, Robert M. (Diane) Dow, Sr., William E. (Ginny) Dow and Richard D. (Sally) Dow; eleven grandchildren, Robert M. (Elizabeth) Dow, Jr., Thomas P. Helen M. Goff, 88, of DeKalb, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. Born June 2, 1922, in Homer, Ill., the daughter of Clell and Zoe Clutter, Helen was married to the late Gilbert J. "Dick" Goff on Aug. 2, 1942, in DeKalb. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1970., For many years, Helen managed at the DeKalb Montgomery Ward store in the catalog department. She lived most of her life in the DeKalb community, moving here from Homer. Helen was a 57-year member of, , reaching the level of Senior Regent, etc. Helen was also very active in DeKalb American Legion Auxiliary 66 for 36 years. She loved to garden and her beautiful plants and flowers spoke for themselves. Helen loved watching the New York Mets, playing cards and reading. HELEN MARIE RICKARD, 86 ROCKFORD - Helen Marie Rickard, 86, of Rockford died Thursday, May 5, 2011, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. Born March 14, 1925, in Barnett, Mo., the daughter of Ivor and Susan "Pearl" (Tipton) Bradshaw. She was valedictorian at Warrensburg High School. After graduating, she studied Spanish in Saltillo, Mexico. Helen received a BA in English from Central Missouri State University and a master's in English from Rockford College. Married Floyd Rickard on Sept. 6, 1947, in Warrensburg, Mo. She was active with Creekwood Baptist Church. Hosted many American field service students and was on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity. She had a passion for traveling, reading, gardening and music. She and her husband were members of the Cotillion and Ostende Dance Club. Owned the retail store The Olive Tree for 15 years. Enjoyed her many friendships at the Foundation for International Cooperation, and she immensely enjoyed her cottage and book club at Wesley Willows. Survivors include brother, Dr. W.D. Bradshaw (Dottie); daughters, Anne (Alberto) Scarabelli of Roscoe and Kathryn Rickard and Steve Tinkler of Crystal Lake; grandchildren, Stephen Scarabelli, Simona (Richard) Hankins, Melissa Tinkler and Daniel Tinkler; great-grandchildren, Aurelio and Madeline; nieces, Deborah and Jane; and several cousins. She was born on Feb. 1, 1930, in Warsaw, a daughter of William and Margaret "Maggie" Carle Bloyd. Irene married Wilber Turner on May 19, 1947, in Phenix City, Ala. He preceded her in death on July 8, 2010., Irene attended Oak Grove School, rural Carthage. She was of the Christian faith. She and her husband, Wilber, farmed north of Hamilton for many years, starting on March 1, 1950. Irene was a hard worker, dedicating her life to her family. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed playing Bingo. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Basil Jr., James A. Age 86, of Morris and formerly of Chicago, passed away Thursday May 5, 2011 at Morris Hospital. He was born in Evanston, IL. He was born April 5, 1914, in Decatur, a son of Thomas Hammond and Ethel Corrinne Booth Bean. On June 19, 1937, he married Ruth Elizabeth King in Decatur. She died Nov. 2, 1986., He was a 1932 graduate of Decatur High School. In 1936 he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Millikin University in Decatur. In 1973, he received his master's degree from Southern Illinois University., John worked for Moorman's, Monroe Chemical Co. and the Illinois State Division of Rehabilitation. He was the owner of Bean Hobby and Toy Shop., John was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church since 1937. He was a member of the Beta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He belonged to the Quinssippi Stamp Club and numerous philatelic organizations. John was the first president of the Quincy Jaycees. As such, he was also a member of the Exhausted Roosters. He was president of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce when it received its first All-American City title. He was a member of the Quincy Elks and a member of the Quincy German Club. In addition to stamp collecting, he enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and fishing for salmon in Alaska., Survivors include two children, Jackie Bean Oberg and her husband, Don, of Kenai, Alaska, and Tom Bean and his wife, Lia, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jonathan Oberg and his wife, Gina, of Ottawa, Kan., and David Oberg and his wife, DJ Stoeberl, of Crozet, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Kendra Veronica Oberg of Crozet, Va., and Kayleigh Elizabeth Oberg of Ottawa, Kan.; a sister, Mary Mills of Baton Rogue, La.; four nieces; two nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; a very special friend of many years, Marion Grimmer and her daughter, Barb Rowell; also a very large extended family from the entire Bickford Cottage, staff, residents and their families, including Connie Fielding, Sue Ostermiller, Lisa O'Brien, Steve Scott, Roxie Bunk and Kim Lenz., In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Bean Jr.; and a sister, Sarah Black., SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Vermont Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Scott Grulke and the Rev.George Youtzy conducting. After serving, he came home to the Cowden area and worked several different jobs. He then started, owned and operated Switzer's Grocery Store in Cowden for 18 years and the Cowden Video Store. For a while, he was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Highways. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Cowden, the Cowden, and was a life member of the Roy Vanderpool, Post # 4829 of Shelbyville. He loved NASCAR, gardening, traveling and a good western movie. Keith was a great fan of the Chicago Cubs. He was an unselfish and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. Born June 9, 1921, in Bartlett to Fred and Sophia (Watermann) Kenneke. Graduated from Elgin High School, Class of 1938. Pearl married Albert E. Jensen on May 3 1941, in Bartlett, where they farmed before moving to Huntley in 1951 and later to Rochelle in 1969. Pearl and Albert were happily married for 62 years before Albert's death Nov. 16, 2003. Active in church activities, including solo voice in the Adult Choir, Congregational Evening Ladies Aid Society and United Methodist Women. Member of the McHenry County and DeKalb County Home Extension Units, where she served on the board of directors. Member of Creston United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed many close friends. Her main focus in life was always her family, placing her daughter's activities above her own. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include daughters, Marjorie (Dean) Marlowe of Hampshire, Nancy Jensen of Hoffman Estates and Kathryn Fane of Loves Park; grandchildren, Bonnie (Robert) Olson of Belvidere, Carol (Scott) Fiandalo of Huntley, Brian Marlowe of Hampshire and Kristi Fane of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abigail Fiandalo, Alex and Molly Olson. HUNTLEY – Phyllis Balk, 81, a retired nurse and active volunteer in Illinois and New York, died peacefully Wednesday, May 4, 2011, after an extended illness., She was born Phyllis Lorraine Munter on Dec. 27, 1929, in Moline, to Fritz and Alma (Eldean) Munter, both of Swedish heritage. She graduated from Moline High School in 1948 and received her RN degree from Presbyterian-St. Luke's School of Nursing in Chicago in 1951. Upon graduation, she served as an occupational health nurse for Deere & Co. in Moline. After her marriage to journalist Alfred Balk on June 7, 1952, she returned to Chicago, where she served as clinic head nurse and emergency room head nurse at Presbyterian-St. Luke's., During their 58-year marriage, the couple lived in Chicago, Evanston, New York City, Katonah, N.Y., Syracuse, N.Y., and Huntley. She was known in all these communities for her volunteer work and quiet activism, as well as her excellent cooking and extraordinary kindness. In Chicago, she volunteered at Beacon House on Chicago's South Side, and in Evanston and New York she served on the PTA of various schools and as PTA president at Hunter College High School during a critical time in the public school's life, when it was threatened with closure due to lack of funds. She led the high school community in a successful march on New York's City Hall, which was covered by Geraldo Rivera on local TV news. She also was active in Girl Scouts and helping foreign immigrants settle in the U.S., In 1975, she joined Manufacturer's Hanover bank (now part of Chase) as an occupational health nurse, retiring in 1991, when her husband joined the faculty of Syracuse University's Newhouse School., She resumed her long-deferred study towards a bachelor's degree, and in 1997, at age 67, became the oldest alumna in nursing of the State University of New York's Upstate Medical University. The school used a photo of her in cap and gown with her young granddaughter on the cover of its brochures for several years., In Huntley, where she and her husband moved in 1999, she served as a Deacon of First Congregational Church, head of Friends of the Library Book Corner, and as a volunteer with Hospice of Northeastern Illinois and other health organizations. The couple had a happy partnership until his death on Thanksgiving Day in 2010. She served as an important support throughout her husband's distinguished career, as indicated in Balk's scholarly papers in the collections of the Newberry Library in Chicago and Syracuse University., She is survived by two daughters, Laraine Balk Hope of Rockville, Md., and Diane Balk Palguta of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Anna and Andrew Palguta; and her first cousins, Herb, Roger and Judy Eldean of Macatawa, Mich., A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at First Congregational Church of Huntley, 11628 E. Rita T. Kemper

Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Quincy, Rita was the daughter of Otto and Emma Kollmeyer Kriegshauser. While working in Kansas, Rita met her first husband, Paul Workman. They were married upon returning to Quincy on Jan. 8, 1946, in the Rectory of St. Mary's Church. He preceded her in death in 1955. She married Charles J. Kemper on Aug. 21, 1963, in Quincy. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1994., Rita was a 1933 graduate of Quincy High School and a graduate of Quincy College. During the Depression, Rita taught in a country schoolhouse near Beverly and worked part time at the Busy Bee Clothing Store. In 1948, she became a licensed practical nurse. Rita was employed as a ticket agent for the Santa Fe Bus Company at Fifth and Hampshire and later transferred to Santa Fe Trailways in Fort Scott, Kan. Robert D. Larson, 80 ROCKFORD - Robert D. Larson, 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 5, 2011, surrounded by his family. Born Jan. 30, 1931, in Rockford, the son of George and Lillian Larson. He was a U.S. veteran of the Navy, serving during the Korean conflict. Married his loving wife, Jeanine Youngberg, on Nov. 28, 1952, in Rockford and enjoyed 58 years of many wonderful adventures with each other, their children and grandchildren. He took great pride in his life's work as the past president of Youngberg Industries in Belvidere, semi-retiring in the '90s. Bob loved to return to the shop to visit his many cherished and longtime friends that he had built relationships with over the years. His love for his family and friends gave him great joy throughout his life. He never had an idle moment as he enjoyed spending time fishing, going "up north," planting flowers, woodworking, shopping at home centers, lending a hand and talking to just about anyone that crossed his path. He was a Mason, Shriner and an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a great man who will be missed by all who loved and knew him. DECATUR - Rose Mary Filisky, 97, passed away on May 6, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born in Herrick, IL to Allie and Eva Miller on August 28, 1913. She married Ralph Filisky on June 18, 1936 and lived in Decatur most of her life. Together they owned and operated Ralph's Pub from 1944 to 1976. After retirement they enjoyed their winters in McAllen, TX. She leaves three daughters, Linda (U.J.) Booth of Osceola, IA; Pam (Roy) Walker of Decatur; and Sherry (Phil) Wiant of Naples, FL. She also leaves six grandchildren: Jim Wiant, Kevin Walker, Kelley Whalen, Scott Walker, Shelley Couri and Aaron Booth, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, all of whom affectionately called her Grandma Rosie. She also leaves one sister-in-law, Laveta Filisky, of Avon Park, FL. and several nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan and for her 90th birthday, Stan Musial sent her a personally autographed picture of himself, which she cherished. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Gertrude Layman and Ruby Cothern, brother Ted Redman, and granddaughter, Jodi Wiant Dewig. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at St. Mary's Hospital for their loving care. We would also like to thank all those who cared for her at Fair Havens Nursing Home during the past year and at Hickory Point Christian Village during her three year stay with them. Ruth (Cook) Snygg, 83 ROCKFORD - Ruth (Cook) Snygg, 83, of Rockford passed away Friday, May 6, 2011, while holding hands with her husband of 53 years. Born June 17, 1927, in Janesville, Wis. Ruth met Richard E. Snygg while working at National Lock Co.; they married June 23, 1958. Over the years, she worked at Parker Pen, National Lock, Rock River Towers and as a self-employed cleaning lady. Ruth went back to school and earned her GED from Rock Valley College at the age of 63. Though born of German and French descent, she took classes at Rock Valley College to learn to read and speak in Swedish upon graduation. Ruth translated numerous documents for families of Swedish decent. She is the beloved mother of Darrell (Debi) Snygg and Diana (Jeff) Williams; and grandmother to Brian, Scott, Seth and Hannah. She took great pride in her four grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them and sharing stories as they grew into young adults. For more than 50 years, she was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she was married and baptized. Ruth was extremely involved in a variety of activities and organizations. She was an active member of John Erickson/Corona Lodge 23 for more than 50 years. She was a charter member of the Swedish Culture Society and long-time member of the Swedish Historical Society. Ruth served as the public relations officer for the Kishwaukee Genealogy Society and was a board member for the Winnebago Sight and Hearing Organization. Also a member of the Rockford Historical Society and Midway Village, an active supporter of Right to Life participating in several marches. As a cancer survivor, Ruth was active in the Saint Anthony Cancer Survivors Society. Although Ruth lacked cooking skills, she loved to feast on Swedish food, enjoying good food with family and friends. Ruth desired to be outdoors and loved flowers, birds and fishing. She spent many years enjoying time with family and friends at her cottage on Clear Lake, Milton, Wis. During Ruth's life, she was blessed with endless experiences but never learned to drive. Although her husband and brothers made several unsuccessful attempts, giving up after she drove on the wrong side of the road, hit a tree and drove off a bridge. These adventures made her destined to be a passenger. Ruth's childhood was difficult as she grew up and lived in numerous foster homes and foster farms. She moved from Janesville, Wis., to Rockford in 1954, living at the Girls Residence until marrying in 1958. Ruth and Richard were foster parents for an infant girl before having their own children. She greatly loved her children and was very involved in their actives. She was a den mother for Pack 387 and served as a room mother. She always looked forward to attending her children's activities. Ruth loved everyone she met and was always cheerful with a kind word. She spent her final year at St. Anne Provena Nursing Home and had many special relationships with the staff and residences. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Darrell (Debi) Snygg and Diana (Jeff) Williams; brother, Howard; sister, Dorothy (Ray) Erb; grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Seth and Hannah; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cook; numerous nieces and nephews, including several originally from Rockford, Debbie (Bill) Oliver, Mark Snygg, Valerie Loy, Cindy (Ashoka) Bhargave, Rhonda Nelson and Kathy Snygg; also great-nieces and great-nephews. ALGONQUIN – Theresa Hanes-Perski, 76, of Algonquin and formerly of Carpentersville, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at Sherman Hospital surrounded by her family., She was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Bellevue, Ohio, to the late Santo and Gloria Recupero. She was a 54-year resident of the Carpentersville-Algonquin area. She was a former 17-year employee of GD Searle Corp. and a former 24-year employee of Terrace Hill Golf Course. She was a longtime member and former president of the Carpentersville, Post 5915 Womens Auxiliary and a member of the Elgin American Legion Post 57., Survivors include her children, Larry (Julie) Hanes of Algonquin, Bobby Hanes of Ft. Worth, Texas, Cindy (Bob) Sokolowski of Eagle, Wis., Jeff Hanes of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Janice (Ron) Zange of Algonquin; her stepsons, John Perski of Kingston and Michael Perski of Gurnee; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren., She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Robert L. Hanes Sr. on June 2, 1987; her second husband, Daniel J. Academy St. Galesburg, died Friday May 6, 2011, at 6:15 p.m. at his home., He was born Aug. 25, 1947, in Washington, D.C., the son of Thomas Jefferson and Dorothy Gray Sisson Richards. He married Denise Cherrington in Galesburg on Sept. 20, 1975., Dave is survived by his wife, Denise; mother and father Eugene and Dorothy Fleming of White Stone, Va.; one son, Kevin Richards of Galesburg; one brother, Mark and Cathy Fleming of Charlotte Hall, Md.; one sister, Phyllis and Brad Pinckney of Clements, Md.; and one sister-in-law, Patty Fleming. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Richards. One brother, Matt Fleming, died in 2009., He graduated from Duval High School in 1966. He served two tours in Vietnam in the, from 1966 to 1969, attaining the rank of corporal. He worked for Sieg Company and later the Parts House for 16 years, retiring in 1999. Dave was a member of First Church of God and the American Legion in Fairfax, Iowa. He was an avid car enthusiast, loved drag racing and built a 1966 Cobra replica car., Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at First Church of God, with the Rev. Dennis McQuown officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. THOMAS R. POWELL, 51 Loving husband, dad and papa ROCKFORD - Thomas R. Powell, 51, of Rockford passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011, in SwedishAmerican Hospital after a heart attack. Born Jan. 9, 1960, in Rockford, the son of Ronald and Katherine (Pierce) Powell. Married the former Kristine Busekros in Rockford. He was a graduate of Guilford High School and was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Blackhawks fan. He started as a driver at Rockford Speedway, then in 1983 started flagging as John Luther's assistant. In 1984, he was a full-time starter at Rockford Speedway and in 2001 left Rockford for the ASA National Series. From 1992 to 2010, he was involved in weekly tracks: Rockford, Slinger and Madison. Series: NASCAR Midwest Series, NASCAR Northern Series, ASA National Series, ASA Midwest Series, ASA Late Model Series, CRA Series, I-POWER Dash Series, NASCAR Winston West Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Big 8 Series, All American Challenge Series, ARTGO Series, REMAX Series and Busch & Winston West Series. In 1999, he was a recipient of the Jody Deery Award of Excellence and in 2001 was inducted into the Rockford Speedway Hall of Fame. Survived by wife, Kris Powell; daughter, Amanda Powell; son, Logan Powell; grandson, Jayce; sister, Rhonda (Scott) Caproon; brother, Dan Powell, Lyle (Lori) Mathews and Dave (Colleen) Mathews; sister, Anita (David) Sutton; nieces, Kari, Lindsay, Michelle and Jessica; nephews, Ryan, Jake and Ben; stepmother, Ginger Powell; parents-in-law, Don and Karin Busekros; and brothers-in-law, Keith (Candi) Busekros and Kevin Busekros.
