ALICE M. CROWELL

Alice M. Crowell, 96, died May 11, 2011, at Pinecrest Manor Nursing home, Mt. Morris, Ill. Alice was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Clare, the daughter of George and Nellie (Rich) Lambert., She was a DeKalb High School Graduate, class of 1932, and she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. She also earned a master's degree in Education from NIU in 1962., Alice married Frank Crowell on Jan. 1, 1941, in DeKalb; he died in 1971. Alice was a public school, in a one room school near Sycamore for three years, then she taught in the Mt. Morris Elementary Schools for a period of 32 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris. Alice was a member of the Dorcas Circle of the Lutheran Church, several quilting groups, the Ogle County Retired Teachers, the Mt. Morris Senior Center, serving on the board for ten years, and the current events club. Alice was also a world traveler. Alice and her friend, Ruth Balluff, were interested in barns, and after their retirement, they worked up a program, "Barns: a Disappearing Treasure," which was presented to many organizations., Alice is survived by her daughter, Carol Deemer of DeKalb; two grandsons, Rob (Lori) Deemer of Dunkirk, N.Y. and Chris (Debbie) Deemer of Salt Lake City, Utah; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Karissa and Caleb; and brothers, Milton Lambert and Walter (Janice) Lambert, both of DeKalb., She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; and two sisters, Mary Brooks and Eleanor Taylor., Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris with the Rev. Steven Erickson officiating. Visitation will be from Monday, May 23 in the church from 10 a.m. until the service time. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Memorials to L.O.M.C. or Mt. Morris Public Library.


 


 

ARVEL R. "OZZIE" DAVIS

Arvel R. "Ozzie" Davis, 89, of Sycamore, Ill., passed away Jan. 29, 2011, in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. Born Feb. 27, 1921, in Malta, Mont., to Jesse L. and Cora (Mathews) Davis, he married Carolyn M. Clarner March 29, 1941, in Clinton, Iowa. He married Velma L. Thyberg April 23, 1988, at Hillcrest Covenant Church, DeKalb., He was a member of Hillcrest Covenant Church, Sycamore, 1392,, Post 5768, Kishwaukee Archery Club, National Society Automotive Engineers and Sycamore Golf Club since 1950., He was the former president of DeKalb Industrial Management Club, and former Alderman of Sycamore's 1st Ward. He owned Ozzie's Snack Shop and was the original owner of The Pizza Wheel, both in Sycamore., He was a foreman and tool and die engineer employed by Ideal Industries in Sycamore. He was a real estate broker since 1966., He was a, veteran, serving as a Private 1st Class in the Army's 25th division in the South Pacific. He was a, and, recipient., Ozzie graduated DeKalb High School in 1939, and was an avid golfer., He is survived by his loving wife, Velma; three daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Yunek of Sycamore, Carole Bellamy of Medford, Wis., and Gayle (Alan) Volpp of Hampshire; twin sons, Randall (Nellie) Davis of Sycamore and Darrel Davis of Rockford; one stepson, Larry Thyberg of Bullhead City, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Dona (Cletus) O'Donnell of Madison, Wis., and Diane (Kenneth) Hightower of Auburn Hills, Mich.; one brother, Roy (Marilyn) Davis of DeKalb; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; and 6 great-stepgrandchildren., He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carolyn in 1983; two stepgrandsons, Randy Thyberg and Ben Hightower; and three brothers, Lloyd, Ward and Forest "Bud" Davis., Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Hillcrest Covenant Church in DeKalb, Pastor Steve Larson officiating. Visitation at 1 p.m. at the church until time of the service. A military burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Sycamore.

Mrs. Pennington was born April 8, 1920, near Frankford, to Charley E. and Sadie E. Montgomery Burroughs. She married Russell F. Pennington on April 20, 1940, in Hannibal. He died on Dec. 17, 1995., Mrs. Pennington formerly worked for International Shoe Co. in Hannibal. She also had worked at department stores in Hannibal, and from 1963 until 1976 she worked at Motorola in Quincy, Ill., She had been a member of Arch United Methodist Church in Hannibal since 1951 and was a member of the Harmony Sunday School Class. Anna attended Ralls County grade schools and graduated from New London High School, Class of 1938. She loved making quilts and enjoyed cooking, especially trying new recipes., Survivors include a daughter, Patricia A. Tate, and husband, Norman, of Quincy; two grandchildren, Russell W. Tate, and wife, Kay, of Liberty, Ill., and Carol E. Lewis, and husband, Steve, of Quincy; four great-grandchildren, Reed P. CLARA RUTH BRILES

Clara Ruth Briles, 91, of DeKalb, passed away Saturday, May 7, under the tender care of the DeKalb County Hospice at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, DeKalb., Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Riverside, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, Ruth was the daughter of Robert Pierce and Ida (Hightower) Wilson. She married Worthie Elwood Briles on June 6, 1941, in Austin, Texas, while the two of them were attending the, . Later that summer, Ruth and Elwood received their Bachelors of Arts degrees in zoology from UT. They then went to the, at Madison to begin work on their advanced degrees. However, those efforts were set aside so that Elwood could serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II., Following World War II and the births of their first two children (Susan and David), Ruth and Elwood returned to Madison where they received their advanced degrees in immunogenetics in 1948 (Ruth: M.S., Elwood: Ph.D.). The family then moved to College Station, Texas, where Elwood was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M and where their younger daughter Sara was born. After the family moved to DeKalb in 1957, Ruth worked with Elwood at the DeKalb Agricultural Association as a research associate in immunogenetics research from 1958-1968. From 1968-1970, Ruth was an Instructor in biological sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb., From 1970-2000, Ruth again worked with Elwood, this time as a research associate for immunogenetics research in the Biology Department at NIU. On October 9, 2004, Elwood and Ruth were recognized for their contributions to avian genetics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture., Ruth was active in the American Association of University Women, volunteered at the Ellwood House and served for several years as the superintendent of the Sunday school at First Congregational Church in DeKalb., She is survived by her husband, Elwood; children, Susan Marie (Duane) Kniebes of Boulder, Colo., David Elwood (Marilyn Crain) Briles of Birmingham, Ala. and Sara (Richard Briles Moriarty) Briles of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Dustin Lincoln (Dana Churness) Briles Moriarty of Herbster, Wis., Rachel Florence (fiancé Duy Hoang) Briles of Austin, Texas and Travis Crain Briles of Boulder, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Linda (Kniebes) Kozak and Carrie (Steve) Swift (Kniebes) of Lisle, Ill. and Van Kniebes of Boulder; great-grandchildren, Wylder Lee and Olin Elwood Moriarty of Herbster; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews, including especially nephews, Jesse Rodman Wilson Jr. (Cathy) of Cold Springs, Nev., Hal (Claudia) Cochran of West Covina, Calif., Dale (Jacqueline) Cochran of San Clemente, Calif. and Roy (Thérèse) Krebs of Alexandria, Va., She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Robert Pierce Wilson II, Travis Hudson Wilson I, Ida Gertrude Krebs, Charlotte Josephine Cochran, Sarah Elizabeth Quinlan and Jesse Rodman Wilson Sr.; and her brothers-in-law, Connally Oran Briles, Van Gordon Briles and Jack David Briles., A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 5, in the Hearthside Room in the Visitors' Center of the Ellwood House, 509 W. After that, she worked for American Can Co. and was involved in various roles, including the AFLCIO., Finally, she completed her working years at Gearmaster of McHenry, a division of Emerson Corp., She is survived by her loving husband, Chester; a daughter, Carol (Ed) Lagestee; her sons, Craig (Christine Viola) Prondzinski and Christopher (Mary) Prondzinski; four loving grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren., She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Louis and Chester; and her sisters, Eleanor and Eve., Friends may visit from 9 a.m. until the funeral Mass celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Patrick Catholic Church of McHenry., There will be a memorial luncheon after the Mass celebration at Maravella's Restaurant in Fox Lake.

DONALD C. GEPHARD

Donald C. Gephard, 86, of Live Oak, Fla., formerly of Aurora, Ill., passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011. He was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Grover Hill, Ohio, the son of LeRoy and Merita (Odiorne) Gephard., The family moved to Aurora in 1928. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School, graduating in 1939. He then attended East Aurora High School, graduating in 1943. Immediately upon graduation, he was inducted into the Armed Forces, serving in, as a Flight Engineer on B-24 heavy bombers with the 8th Air Force stationed in England. After being discharged, he attended Aurora College graduating in 1949. In 1954, he founded his own business, Donmar Distributors, Inc., and retired in 1985. On April 8, 1961, he married Ann Weber of Sugar Grove, who then joined him in his business. Donald was an avid bowler, a hard worker, both indoors and out, and a die-hard Cubs fan., He is survived by his wife and caregiver, Ann, of fifty years; children, Donna (Barry) Rogers, David Gephard, Stephen (Diana) Gephard, all of Conn., and Dianne (John) Curry of Hinckley; three grandchildren, Donald Alger, Kevin Alger and Andrea Curry; one sister, Anita Watkins of Live Oak; and many nieces and nephews., He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister in infancy., Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk with the Rev. Wayne Derber officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Mound Cemetery in Somonauk. Edna Mae Askelson, of Waterman, Ill., passed away at home on May 12, 2011., She was born on Feb. 13, 1917, in Pittsburg, Pa., the daughter of Michael and Pauline Kohler. She worked for Malone's Department Store in DeKalb for many years, and later helped establish and operate Honey Hill Orchard in Waterman. Grandma Edna was well known at the orchard for her cider donuts. Edna was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Waterman. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, an avid gardener and a talented artist, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family., She is survived by two daughters, Janet (Ray) Hartman of Sarasota, Fla., and Kathy (Steve) Bock of Waterman; five grandchildren, Dave (Marilyn) Hartman of Sarasota, Dan (Stacy) Hartman of Indianapolis, Ind., Lindsay (Berk) Boehne of Shabbona, Stephanie (Nate) Lamoreux of Lanark, Ill., and Brittany Bock of Waterman; seven great-grandchildren, Derek and Kendall Hartman, Jordan and Tyler Hartman, Avery and Madison Boehne and Lleyton Lamoreux; one sister, Katherine Ogle; two brothers, Jay Kohler and Donald (Betty) Kohler; and many nieces and nephews., She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Askelson; three brothers, Max, Frank and John Kohler; and two sisters, Lillian Seppala and Alice Larson., Friends and family can call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the United Methodist Church of Waterman. After employment at Hayes Trucking in Mattoon, she worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in San Antonio, Texas, during World War II. She married Arthur Freesh June 3, 1945 in Arcola. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1982. She and her husband farmed for several years southeast of Sullivan until they moved to their home east of Sullivan in 1961. She resided at Titus Manor since March, 2006. She was employed by Country Companies Insurance, Sullivan Sale Barn, Moultrie County FS, Sullivan Dairy, and Yellow Freight. She was a member of St. Columcille Catholic Church, Moultrie County Home Bureau, and RSVP, volunteering at Titus Manor. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Smith and husband Denny of Sullivan; her son Patrick Noel Freesh and wife Joan of Webster Groves, MO; granddaughter Angela (Dan) Zamudio of St. John, IN; grandsons Parker (Sage) Hale of Lovington; Jared (Marsha) Freesh of Wildwood, MO; and Brian Freesh of North Hollywood, CA; great granddaughters Josie Hale and Neva Zamudio; twin great grandsons Cash and Cruz Hale. Gayle A. Kamm, 81, of Sycamore, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Born May 17, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Russell and Florence (Mueller) Kline, Gayle was married to Victor Kamm., Gayle worked at the Creamery in Dubuque and as a homemaker to family. She loved to be with her children, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a gardener and canned many of her vegetables, loved to travel and go camping. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Kirkland, and was very involved in the church women groups., Gayle is survived by four children, Judith (Allen) Bryant of Sycamore, Beverly (James) Isenberg of Cherry Valley, Pamela (Dez) Appleton of Phoenix, Ariz., and Patrick (Marjorie) Kamm of Kirkland; 11 grandchildren, Christine Martin of Sycamore, Ty Bryant of North Carolina, Kimberly Clark of Rockford, Jodica Clark of Kirkland, Stacey Vera of Sycamore, Trina and Teri Appleton, both of Arizona, Jessica Kamm of Idaho, Elizabeth Howie of Elburn and Kyle and Matthew Winkler, both of Kirkland; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Douglas (Margie) Kline of Pa.; one sister, Levon "Bonnie" Johnson of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews., She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; one son, William; two brothers, Russell and Joseph; and two sisters, Jane and Sally., Her memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at First Lutheran Church, 510 W. GARLAND D. GRACE, 91 ROCHELLE - Garland D. Grace, 91, of Rochelle passed away Monday, May 16, 2011, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Fairfield, Mo., the eldest of the 12 children of Gabriel Dewey Grace and Isa Pearl Fahnestock Grace. He served his country in, as a Navy chief pharmacist mate, attached to Marines in South Pacific battles. He was awarded the, and Bronze and Silver Stars for valor in battle. A graduate of the University of Missouri, he was part of the extension staffs of the University of Missouri and the, . After experience in agribusiness he opened the Grace Agricultural Agency as a farm manager and broker. He dedicated more than three decades to conservation of family farms and farm families. Garland was a past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rochelle, . He was a member of the Masonic Horicon Lodge, American Legion,, Rochelle Post 3878 and a charter member of the Flagg Township Historical Society and the Ogle County Prairie Preservation Society. During his presidency of the Rochelle Wildlife Conservation Club, land was secured and the community lake was constructed. For more than 25 years he was the Ogle County master instructor for hunter safety for the Department of Natural Resources. In 1972 he was honored as the Rochelle Community Leader of the year. Survived by the love of his life, his wife of 45 years, Anita Stahl Dayton of Rochelle; son, Terry (Judy) of Oak Park; stepson, Dr. Tim (Daryl) Dayton of Rochelle; daughters, Gena (Marty) Hartlieb of Rockford, Gloria (Rich) Osmer and Mary Beth (Tim) Oswalt of Dixon; many loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Rolla, John and Sterling; and sisters, Ida Mae Campbell and Diana Grace. Born June 1, 1916, in Chicago, the only child of Perry C. and Gladys (Conway) Ansley. On June 4, 1938, she married Peter J. Damby in Crown Point, Ind.; he died in 2000. Gladys was an active volunteer in many social service organizations, including being a Cub Scout den mother. She was a member of Alabet Temple 31 Daughters of the Nile and the Choraleers singing group. She worked for the Rockford Public Schools for many years and enjoyed reaching out to those needing support. Survivors include daughter, Linda (Jay) Finnegan of Hinsdale, and her children, Jay Scott (Erin), Erin and Meg Finnegan; two sons, Peter Damby of Roscoe, and his children, Melissa (Bob) Wong, Jon (Katie), David and Kathryn Damby; Scott (Connie) Damby of Lewistown, Mont., and his children, Emily and Zach Damby; and two great grandchildren. Johnson in Rockton. After Harland died, she worked in the kitchen at Kinnikinnick Grade School and then did volunteer work at Beloit Memorial Hospital. Member of Old Stone United Church of Christ and a charter member of Roscoe Credo Club. Former member of the PTA and was active in many of the children's school activities. She loved playing cards with friends and her lake property. Charles' pet name for her was "Cookie." Survivors include sons, Edwin (Sharon) Greenfield of Marathon, Fla., and Bob (Sheri) Greenfield of Rockton; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Bob McCartney of Rockton; daughter-in-law, Linda Greenfield of Roscoe; sister, Ruth (Steve) Carlson of Beloit, Wis.; brother, Bud (Addie) Haynes of Roscoe; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen Maclean Sherbenou, 90, of DeKalb, Ill., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center., Born Nov. 28, 1920, in Leon, Kan., to John Lester and Olive Pearl (Doughty) Maclean, she was the oldest of four children, with siblings John, Jim and Mary preceding her in death. After graduating from Leon High School and attending junior college in Eldorado, Kan., she attended Wesley Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kan., graduating with honors in 1942. She worked in Wichita as a nurse and surgical assistant, living with roommates who became life-long friends. When the war ended, she enrolled at Kansas University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology., While at KU, she met her husband-to-be, Edgar L. "Vern" Sherbenou. They were married Aug. 24, 1947, at her parents' home in Leon, Kan., on a day so hot that the candles melted without being lit. They had two sons, Edgar Vern and Jerre Wyn. Living in Lawrence, Kan., and Houston, Texas, they finally settled in DeKalb in 1959. As her children grew older, she practiced nursing in both hospital and clinical settings, and attended NIU School of Nursing. As one of the school's first Masters Candidates, she received her degree in 1969 and joined the faculty as a nursing instructor. During her career, she was active in professional organizations and civic service. Professionally, she was president of the Illinois Nurses Association, active in the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society of Nursing., Civically, she and Vern were founding members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb and dedicated life-long members; she served on the DeKalb County Board of Health; and served a long time on the Board of Barb City Manor. In 1978, accompanying Vern to Thailand on his Fulbright Scholarship, Helen started a program with the local nursing professionals of clinical care and vaccination for the rural villages around Ching Mai. She retired from NIU in 1989 and enjoyed traveling and family and friends., She is survived by both sons, Ed (wife, Joan) and Jerre; and six grandchildren, Ed's sons, Tim, Kyle and Brad, and Jerre's children, Alyce, Evelyn and Chris., She was predeceased by her husband, Vern, in 2007., A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115, with the Rev. Linda Slabon officiating. OTTAWA, Kan. - Helena Elizabeth Kramer, 98, died May 14, 2011 at Ransom Memorial Hospital., Born Nov. 17, 1912, at Ellisville, Ill., to Robert George and Edna Blanche (Cafferty) Hatch, she attended schools in Fulton County, Ill., graduating in 1930 from Abingdon High School. She graduated from Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Mo., in 1931 with a degree in business. Upon completion of her schooling, she moved to Kansas City, Mo., working for a time at an insurance company, rising from her position as a secretary to president of a serum company., On March 26, 1933, she married Waldo F. "Bud" Kramer in Episcopalian Chapel, Fort Leavenworth. In the fall of 1933, they moved to Ottawa, and, with the exception of four years, that was her home. They lived three years in Salina and one year in Tulsa, Okla., They were parents of two sons, John Robert, born June 5, 1934, and George Frederick, born March 21, 1938, both in Ottawa., Helena was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Ottawa, Order of Eastern Star, Beta Club, Ottawa Women's Golf Association and Ottawa Rotary Annes. She also enjoyed playing bridge., She was primarily a homemaker, but when the Kramer Drug Store was purchased in 1950, she was actively involved in the business until retiring in the early 1970s., Survivors include daughters-in-law Jacquelyn Kramer of Ottawa and Jeannie Kramer of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren, John Clayton Kramer and wife Rosalind of Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, Timothy James Kramer and wife Joan of Wichita, Kan., Kenton Frederick Kramer and wife Leah of Belton, Mo., Teresa Jane (Kramer) Rasmussen and husband Stanley of Lawrence, Kan., Douglas Edward Kramer and wife Stacey of Holton, Kai Robert Kramer of Washington, D.C., Brandon William Kramer of Los Angeles, Calif., and Kirsten Helena Alicia Ann (Kramer) McCaskill and husband Scott of Austin, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren., Helena was preceded in death by her husband, W.F., in November 1998; sons John Robert in September 1980 and George Frederick in May 2009; a grandson, Thomas Mark in March 1957; her parents, Robert George and Edna Blanche Hatch; three brothers, Erwin Robert, Harold Rae and George Asa Hatch; and four sisters, Evelyn Marie (Hatch) Stewart, Clara Mae (Hatch) Camren, Louise Belle (Hatch) Burgoyne and Roberta Lee (Hatch) Bushong., Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, at First United Methodist Church of Ottawa, with the Rev. He married Martha "Marti" Lea Waters of Percy on Nov. 14, 1963. She survives., Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1955 to 1957 and U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963. His tenure with the Army included service in the 502nd INF/101st Airborne DIV and the 504th INF / 82nd Airborne DIV. He served with distinction and earned numerous achievement qualifications including that of Airborne Jumpmaster. Jack received an honorable discharge at the rank of staff sergeant. Jack worked as a coal miner for Streamline Coal and Consolidated Coal Co., "Burning Star No. 4" and retired after 35 years. He was a member of UMWA Local 1825 and a member of First Baptist Church of Pinckneyville. He is survived by children Joleen (Dan) Farnesi of Homer Glen, Julie Dougherty of Lansing, John Whittle Jr. of Lansing and Jennifer Whittle of Florida. He is also survived by his partner of Phoenix, AZ Alice Forrester and mother of his children, Eileen (Quinlan) Whittle; brothers Bobby Dale Strauch of Phoenix, AZ and Gerald Strauch of Hebron, IN.; wonderful nephew Ron (Veronica) Whittle Jr., Connie Embry, Donna (Danny) Brozowski, Michael (Jodi) Whittle, Kathy Gibbons, Selly Strauch, Katie Strauch, grandfather to 12 and great uncle to many. John served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He also made many friends in Phoenix and was always there to lend a helping hand, advice, a shoulder to cry on and anything else that someone asked or needed from him. He had a wonderful support group in Phoenix were he made many friends over the years. He loved to pan for gold out west and travel to Laughlin to gamble a little bit. He also loved his "roundup" trips. He will be greatly missed by the Phoenix group of friends, as well as family here back home in the Chicago area. He was nicknamed "Chicago John". Everyone knew him by that name. Memorial service to be held at a later date at his daughter's home in Homer Glen.

Active member of the Coachmen Street Rodders of Beloit, and built several award-winning street rods. He also created the award trophies for the Autorama for the last nine years. K.C. was an avid woodworker and created many fine pieces of furniture for family and friends. Linda Kay Aves, 62, of Creston, Ill., passed away May 8, 2011, surrounded by her family at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, Ill. She was born June 19, 1948, in Sycamore, to Arthur William Lawrence and Katherine King Lawrence., She graduated from Elisabeth High School in 1966 and Rockford Cosmetology School in 1967. Linda married Norman Ross Aves Nov. 20, 1976, in Kirkland. She did hair for a short stint, then worked at Brodies in DeKalb and then worked for General Electric in DeKalb for more than 25 years. She loved going places, but was unable to get around these last few years, now she is soaring. She cherished her shopping excursions with her great niece Savannah. The next best thing was going to the casinos, trying the good food and playing the slots. LAWRENCE E. O'NEAL, 76 ROCKFORD - Lawrence E. O'Neal, 76, of Rockford died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, in his home, after a battle with cancer. Born March 21, 1935, in Rockford to Edward L. and Ann (Kassen) O'Neal. Married Betty J. Williams on June 4, 1960, in Denver. He was in the U.S. Air Force and Civil Service for 31 years, serving in Korea and Vietnam. Former member of St. James Catholic Church. Lawrence was an avid birder, and loved to count eagles on the Mississippi river. He had an extensive rock and mineral collection from his time on vacation and military tours around the world. Numerous NASA collections, World War II memorabilia and was part of the first crew in the USAF missile program. He attended East High School and graduated from the Roosevelt Military Academy. Survivors include wife, Betty of Rockford; brother-in-law, George (Carolyn) Williams; niece, Lorena Williams and nephew, Allen Williams, all of Belvidere; nephew, Robert (Tobie) Williams of Alabama; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was the youngest daughter in a family of five sisters and four brothers. She and her late husband, Norton (who passed away in 1992) spent 20 years traveling with the United States Air Force before settling in Clarence, IL in 1952. Margaret moved to Urbana, IL in 1998. She is survived by her daughter Colleen Hart of Champaign, son Joe (Audrey) Hudson of Chesterton, IN, and daughter Debbie Hudson (Pat Pomes) of South Bend, IN. Her grandchildren are Karen (Scott) Cochrane of Champaign, Kevin (Chris) Hart of Sidney, IL, Stacie Hudson of Chicago, and Franklin Hudson-Pomes of South Bend, IN. Margaret also had six great grandchildren. Her husband, parents, and all sisters and brothers preceded her in death. The Champaign Consortium employed Margaret for many years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Urbana, the Illinois Sheriff's Association, and the Chanute Air Museum. Margaret enjoyed giving and sharing her time and talents with others. She is also survived by her twin brother, Marion "Bud" Hasley of Abingdon; a sister, Barbara Hickey of Abingdon; six grandchildren, Heather Stickle, Amanda Robinson, Jamie Baumgardner, Jacob Baumgardner, MaKayla Baumgardner, and Myiah Davis; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 29, 1994; her mother and father; her stepfather, Emmett Cutler; a brother, Donald Ray Hasley; and a stepgrandson, Army Specialist Bryan Hale Nelson., Marie graduated from Abingdon High School in 1952 and Cottage School of Nursing in 1955. Jack had a great love for the outdoors, liked tinkering with his Farm-All Super A tractor, and was fond of taking his grandsons for drives and sharing old-time stories with them. AUSTIN, Texas – Robert Jeffery Freeman, 69, of Austin and formerly of Cary, was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Oak Park, to Jane Warren and Harold Gale Freeman., He grew up in Sterling and Rock Falls. An avid drummer and car enthusiast throughout his youth, he continued his studies at Bradley University in Peoria. He married Barbara (Bartel ) Freeman in 1967. They had two children, Jeffery Robert and Elizabeth Lynne, and later divorced., He worked for 36 years as a high school auto mechanics teacher in High School District 214, Arlington Heights., He married his best friend, Diane (Backman) Freeman, in 1993, and upon retirement, they moved near Daytona Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents., Mr. Yates graduated from Jacksonville High School; he attended the University of Wisconsin and received his B.S. from Bradley University. He received his Master's in Education Administration from the, – Springfield and his Doctorate in Educational Administration from Illinois State University. He had taught at the Springfield Public School District, was high school principal at Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro and was Superintendent at Ford Central Community District. He was the Superintendent for 19 years at Pontiac Township High School District 90 and was the Associate Professor of Education Administration at Illinois State University., Ronald was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pontiac. He was a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and served as the state wide president of this organization from 1995-1996. He was also a member of the American Association of School Administrators, St. James Hospital Foundation, where he was chairperson from 1998-2000; the Pontiac Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, where he was chairperson from 1991-1992; the Pontiac, , where he was president from 1990-1991; the United Way of Pontiac, where he was an Annual Campaign Co-Chair; the Pontiac, , where he was a trustee; and the Pontiac Masonic Lodge., He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved to travel with his wife and make his yearly fishing trips to Canada. He loved watching the Chicago Bears, Illini basketball and football, the St. Louis Cardinals and, of course, golf. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their various hockey, basketball, football and volleyball games. AVON - Royce M. Davis, 91, Avon, passed away at 8 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, at home., He was born June 8, 1919, in Avon, the son of W. E. and Bess Melton Davis. He married Martha Welsh on July 21, 1945, in Galesburg., He is survived by his wife of Avon and one sister, Martha Orwig of Avon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only child (Kathryn Davis) and one brother (Edwin N. Davis)., He was born and raised in Avon, where he lived his entire life. As a young man he had a band called Otto and the Ottoettes. He was a soda jerk at Fred Jaynes' Drug Store. He graduated from Avon High School and then graduated from Knox College in 1942; while there he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity., He taught band in Avon, Valley, Bushnell and Abingdon schools, also giving private lessons, and in more recent years was director of the Avon Town Band. RUSSELL J. MILANO, 63 ROCKFORD - We wake up this morning without one of the points of light in Rockford. Russ Milano died suddenly Saturday, May 14, 2011. He was a beloved husband, father, friend and neighbor. Russ was an accomplished cook, caretaker, volunteer, advocate for all children, cyclist and baby whisperer. He belonged to the Rockford Blackhawk Bike Club and Rockford Friends of the Library. He volunteered at Motherhouse, Ellis Arts Academy and Womanspace. Russ enjoyed camping, biking, gardening, reading and watching wildlife. We lost a thoughtful, caring person. Russ's career as an accountant started at Essex Wire. After spending 20 years at Sundstrand Corp., he became the bursar at Northern Illinois University and retired from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2003. Survivors include his wife, Adele; daughters, Jennifer Milano, Adela (Amol Mhatre) Milano and Elizabeth Milano; mother, Ann Milano; siblings, Carla (Joel) Nelson, Carmen (Bronwyn Reece) Milano, Nick (Jane) Milano, Tony (Sara) Milano and Rosemary Milano; and several nieces and nephews. Born November 17, 2001 to Machell (Wesley) and Chris Klee, Sam, a proud student of UCP Prairieland Academy, had a magnetic aura about her, a knack of drawing people in with her big blue eyes, and always seemed to radiate a sense of calm and peace. She enjoyed the voices of her siblings, family cuddle time, she had lots of friends, and she loved listening to music, especially country, which seemed to relax her. Villetta (Allen) Brundage, 97, went to be with her Lord April 25, 2011., She was born in Milledgeville, Ill., to Orville and Clara Allen. The oldest of five children, she graduated from Milledgeville High School as valedictorian and went on to Illinois State Teachers College in DeKalb. Her 26 years of teaching included everything from a one-room school house, a grade school class in LaGrange, high school at Malta, finishing with teaching second grade and then first, at Lee Elementary. She met her husband, Maurice, while teaching in Malta and they enjoyed 53 years together. McHENRY – Virginia "Jinny" Williams, 85, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 15, 2011, at The McHenry Villa., She was born Oct. 24, 1925, in McHenry, to Joseph A. and Elizabeth (Neiss) Williams., She graduated from St. Anne's Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago when she was 21. In February 1962, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Loyola University, graduating cum laude., She completed her master's degree in community health at Northern Illinois University in 1973. Her nursing career included Hines V.A. Hospital, Chicago Project coordinator, and Indian Health Service., In 1973, she was the first nurse in Illinois to be sole owner and operator of an independent nursing practice, Family Nursing. More than 2,000 patients were served both in short-term single visits and in long-term years of consistent care., She believed that all nurses, as licensed professionals, had autonomy, authority, availability and accountability., Many McHenry natives remember her driving her yellow Mercedes Benz from one home visit to the next., Her hospitality welcomed friends and relatives to her home on Saturdays for pot roast and long conversation., She always was fascinated with events about a person's life and encouraged adventure. She was extremely interested in what others had to say about travel, life, religion and work., She was awarded Community Leader of the Year from Centegra in 2005, 10 years after she had a brain stem stroke, which affected her body and voice but not her will., Her contribution fostered positive attitudes and improved social and economic opportunities for people with disabilities in McHenry County., She was recognized as a finalist for the 1999 Triumph of the Human Spirit Award.
