Barbara Koopmann

Koopmann, Barbara Ann (nee Hellmann) Age 79 years old, entered eternal life the way she lived on earth, quietly and peacefully, on May 5, 2011, at Joliet Community Hospice, with four generations present surrounding her with their love. Barbara was born in Champaign IL on November 28, 1931 to Charles Hellmann (2001) and Aline Hurley (1973) and married her husband, of 56 years, James (October 2010) in 1954. She had two daughters, Sharon (David) Trizna of Joliet and Kim (Michael Pavese) Koopmann of Ft Myers FL, two grand daughters, Kirsten (Anthony) Frankovich of Joliet and Kaitlyn Trizna of Grand Rapids MI, and two great grandchildren, Grace and Parker Frankovich of Joliet. Barbara was a graduate of St. Patrick Crade School in Joliet and Joliet Central High School (1949). Early in her life she worked for Illinois Bell Telephone and Caterpillar. Barbara's mother was a business owner/hairdresser in Joliet. After her passing, Barbara managed and maintained her mother's beauty salons. She then worked at the Joliet Medical Croup in the Insurance Dept, before moving to Ft. Myers, Florida in 1980. In Florida, she found enjoyment working at a Children's Boutique and a Women's Dress Shop, as well as at the Ft. Myers Airport Gift Shop. Barbara truly relished working there because of the interesting people she would meet on their travels. She also volunteered at Health Park Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida. Barbara enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was at the beach listening to the waves, relaxing at the pool, boating, or gazing at the beauty of a sunset. She loved to go on cruises, travel, and play cards. She treasured the time spent with her grand children when they would visit, and always looked forward to "coming home' to Joliet to see them, and catch up with her old friends, whom she dearly missed. In Florida, "Barbie" was fortunate to have a loving and caring friend, Joan Crowther. She logged countless hours of laughter with her and her wonderful family over the years. Barbara's family describes her as a kind, soft spoken, thoughtful, and honest woman. Her daughters turned to her for help, advice, and reassurance, and she always came through. She was a shining example to others of what it means to be a good person. She was also a very private person, who never liked confrontation, and anything you told her was kept confidential. She was a gift to all who knew her. Barbara was a petite woman with an insatiable appetite. She loved to dine out with family and friends and was often heard saying, "Any meal that you don't have to cook or clean up makes it that much more delicious!" She had quite the collection of menus and match books from restaurants too! She would never consider herself an excellent cook, but each family member had their favorites she would make for them. Barbara moved "back home" to Joliet in 2007 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years earlier. The disease was a difficult one and left Barbara unable to enjoy her favorite things for much too long. But her family rejoices and celebrates her life, knowing that her passing returns her health and memory to her. Barbara would want to thank the compassionate staff at Joliet Community Hospice, Dr. Raymond Orenic, Dr. John Walsh, Dr. R.W. Schubert, and Dr. Karim Tourk. She would extend that gratitude to The Deerbrook Nursing Home, and the tireless patience of the caregivers there, as well as to The Timbers of Shorewood. We are sure she is also grateful for all those she held dear to her heart and who blessed her life. Barbara wished to have cremation rites accorded with inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville. A private service will be held with her immediate family. Memorials are welcomed and can be made to The, or Joliet Area Community Hospice in Barbara's name. In your mercy Lord, give her a holy rest and peace at last.

Sadie N. Castagno

Mrs. Castagno was born Sadie Lavonne Noren in Taylorville on Aug. 2, 1917, a daughter of Perry and Inez Davis Noren. She lived the first nine years of her life in Taylorville, before moving with her parents to a farm near that city in 1926. She completed the eighth grade in a one-room country school, after which she attended Taylorville High School. In her first year, she rode to school with her older brother, but after that year had no way to get to town each day. Thus, for the next two years she lived in town by earning her room and board doing housekeeping and ironing and caring for the son of the woman with whom she stayed. In her senior year, she stayed in Taylorville with a friend of her aunt., After graduating from high school in 1935, Sadie attended Illinois State Normal Teachers' College in Normal for two years and received a teaching certificate. She then taught elementary school in Taylorville for four years, from 1937 until 1941. After that, she took a job in a Bloomington elementary school for two years, 1941-1943. In the meantime, she went to summer school at Normal to complete work on her bachelor's degree, which she received in 1943., Sadie married James D. "Jim" Castagno, of Kincaid, on June 17, 1943. He was a lieutenant in the Army at the time, and soon he left for England, where he trained for and participated in the invasion of France. While he was overseas, Sadie lived with her parents and from 1944 to 1946 taught in the same one-room school she had attended in rural Christian County. The school was about a mile from her parent's house, and she commented that she "got to walk there as a student and as a teacher." She also had her first child, James R., in 1944., on the G.I. Bill. While living there, Sadie had her second child, Barbara, in 1948. In 1949 the family moved to Heyworth, a small town about 12 miles south of Bloomington. During that time, she gave birth to her third child, Kenneth, in 1950., The family moved to Quincy in 1953, and Sadie resumed her teaching career in 1955 in the Quincy school system. She taught at Emerson School from 1955 until 1971 and during this period she earned her master's degree from Western Illinois University in 1968. She was selected to join the faculty at the new and somewhat experimental Lincoln School, where she taught from 1971 until she retired in 1982. She was proud of the fact that she was the oldest teacher selected for Lincoln School and regarded it as a testament to her youthful attitude and unflagging enthusiasm for working with children., Sadie was a member of the Adams County Retired Teachers Association, for which she was president for two years. She was also a regional director of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a longtime member of the National Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, and the American Association of University Women. For many people in towns around Quincy, though, she was best known as a member of the Gem City Rock Club. For 10 years after she retired, she transported displays of rocks and minerals to approximately 35 schools and libraries within a 50-mile radius of Quincy. Sadie also volunteered at the Quincy Museum and Blessing Hospital on 14th Street., She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Patricia Castagno, of Mahwah, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Wendy Castagno, of Columbia, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren., Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1964; and her daughter, Barbara, in 1981., SERVICES: 2 p.m. memorial service Friday, June 24, in Faith Presbyterian Church, 1027 S. 24th St. Burial of ashes and graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville.
